Post Quick and dirty review: Zed Squad MEGA Magnus Set  Reply with quote

Greetings guys, gals, and everyone in between, Kraig here with my first useful post! Today is hopefully the first of many reviews of some of the more unusual variants of popular blasters, and some more popular ones in the future! I'm not going to be talking much technical stuff because the walrus's, vampires, and tall people on youtube have it covered already.

What and how much:

Today's review is on the Nerf Zombie Strike MEGA Magnus 2-pack, i paid £21.99 for it, and it comes packaged with X2 custom painted Magnus blasters, X2 'syringe' MEGA darts, and X4 Plain green MEGA darts because Hasbro are lazy. Youtube veteran and all round cool guy Bobololo first discovered these waaay back in 2014, but i can't say i've ever seen them till the other day where i stumbled upon them on the Nerf wiki by accident and immediately sought them out. A regular Magnus will set you back between £15 and £20 so i felt that getting a set of two for a little extra seemed an amazing bargain.

Sweeeet.

Why, Hasbro?

Is it the same as regular Magnus:

I've taken them both apart and you have my word that the internals are identical, to the point that some of the plastic innards are MEGA red, still. The build quality is identical to most, if not all Nerf products.

Do they perform:

I do not own a chrono, and my back garden is precisely 50 feet long from my kitchen window to my garden wall. Bearing this in mind, firing the packaged MEGA darts, both blasters consistently hit between the 40-50 foot mark, with most hitting the back wall pretty darn hard so i imagine they still had some love left to give before dropping. They perform like the regular Magnus, and that's both a pro and a con. I hammered a worker calibre conversion tube into the blue one and managed to fire elites the full 50 feet every time, with some sailing over the back wall for another 20 or so feet before hitting the back wall of the house opposite, hot damn. The only downside is the fishtailing issue that seems rife within the worker calibre conversion barrels as observed by Bobololo and many others.

My opinion:
Two Magnus's are better than one, i'm calling them thunder and lightning. I think i'm gonna keep these two for some last ditch akimbo Desert Eagle action. I don't think i'm ever going to need to paint them other than to touch up the paint already present. I've always been impressed with the Magnus, it's a very no nonsense design, almost Kalashnikov-esque in it's brutally simple and rugged mechanism. I will not hear the Magnus criticised over the mechanism when it is usually the half-baked design of terribad ammo that causes the vast majority of problems. I'm planning to do a full elite dart conversion to the blue one in the near future because you can't seem to get the star wars pistols in the uk for love nor money, and because i hate mega ammo.  My only criticism is that neither of the units were very well lubricated, however this could just be because they could potentially have been in storage up to two years, and everything was fine after the application of some OMW white lithium grease so no harm done really, i even managed to get some into the notorious sealed off plunger group so go me.

OK that's it for this week, i'll be back next week with a quick and dirty review for the Buzz Bee toys ultra tek brute!

Thanks so much for reading, and since this is my first proper post i'd appreciate any feedback you have to give, and sorry in advance if my pictures are too big, PM me and i'll shrink them down.

Ciao for now,

Kraig Smile

Very informative, well done sir! I was wondering if there was any difference between the regular one and the zombie strike ones. I didn't know that you could convert it to use elites rather than megas. In case you are wondering a regular Magnus costs about £15.

Thanks, i'm glad you like it, i'm hoping to put out at least one of these a month! I've just edited it to include the price, a silly oversight on my part, thanks for pointing it out. if you or anyone else see's anything that i should have put in, don't hesitate to mention it, i'd like to make my stuff as accurate as possible. Nice work, good to see more reviews.
I should try to do a couple myself now.

You quite often see these  pop up in B&M for a good price.

Look forward to the next review
