Post GuN9 report  Reply with quote
Oh boy!

I never thought one of our general monthly events would top 40 players, which is what I expected this month, so hitting the 60 mark is just a little mind blowing.

All three of the GuN organisers were back this month, the first time we'd all been around for a while, and we'd been able to advertise it better this month, on here, on our own site, in the two churches, and the church had advertised it on their local community Facebook group.

And it showed. We had church elders, the key holder who was probably 60 years old, church members… from the community, we were one of several events on today, and so people popped in and out. From the Nerf scene, the Blackpool lads were back after a short break, and most of the usuals were back.

The first 2 and a bit hours were kid games, our usual fair of freeze tag, android etc. We added a tweak to one of the freeze tag games, introducing zombies into it, which is hilarious and knackering. We tried Terminator, which I reckon would have been fine with a smaller group, but was a bit too chaotic.

We managed to get rid of the kids and then ran 3 games of Special Farces. I'd aimed for more, but at this point we were all seriously knackered… even the superhuman Andrew was flagging at this point.

The Special Farces rules were slightly on the complex side and games suffered from the usual problem we've found with the Farsley venue: it's very easy To get bogged down in doorways.

Game 1, the special farces team got bogged down by their response point, and couldn't make any headway into the building.
Game 2, was the GuN, and we rescued the hostage, and personally played well, working as a team, covering each other as we peeled away from doorways and healing etc.
Game 3, was tbr and dazzle740 plus two kids. They breached further into the venue, but got bogged down in one corridor, and suffered against my arsenal.

As a group of organisers, there's some things we need to improve on with running such large groups. These are things that you don't even think about normally… Al gave me some ideas…

Gear wise, I had some minor issues, and it did seem like a lot of us did. Bertha shredded a dart and spat out foam bits for the rest of the clip, and the accuracy was off which I'm hoping is down to the modulus front barrel I'm using to hold the sling. Andrew's 8 shot hammershot cylinder worked great and there were a few ironic moments where I used it to try and take him out, main problem was the Blasterparts metal kit not priming right. Didn't use the sledgefire much, rotofury with spring upgrade is still poor performance in comparison to other blasters, and pyragon jammed in the middle of laying down a hail of discs to suppress a corridor.

I think our kit is just suffering from a bit of wear and tear and war fatigue! Given that today was event number nine that's fair enough.

Crowd control with kids is a challenge at the best of times. When they are loaded up with Nerf it just gets harder so you did a great job in the circumstances BGUK.

As we get used to special farces (my auto fill even knew that was coming 😀) it'll flow better. For a first attempt we'll rate it. My son thought it was brilliant.

You two did a phenomenal job!

GuN9 was phenomenal! Absolutely superb and I missed it last month.

It was great seeing BigAl again. You and your family are ace and I'm looking forward to coming to FDT with you on your own turf some time. I'll bring some of my money with me!

I'm always impressed with the stuff that the Blackpool contingent bring down. Gold leaf on a blaster???? I loved it! And that's without their sheer Nerfing prowess!

It was great to meet andrew! I hope he doesn't mind me saying this, but he's a great guy who I think's going on to big things! Check out his 3D printed stuff. A great mind and a great Nerfer.

I enjoyed catching up with Tanithlord and chatting about Cataclysm whilst waiting for someone to lock up the building. I think I want to go along and monster sometime ^_^

Seiryuu's epic blue on blue spree was legendary. I'm not sure when he started, but at one point, he just wandered the building, opening up on anyone he saw, regardless of team, alive or dead status. I think that was one of my favourite parts of the event! I think I would love to work with you in your Chili shop. We'd probably get sacked for having too much fun though...

BGUK's daughter was lethal with that Rotofury. The number of times I heard a brief whistle followed by a sting was unreal.

I loved both being a Terrorist and playing as a Special Farces unit. I think the idea's superb and a great mix between LARP and Nerf Warring. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it develops. I think the idea of dividing up the event into general and older sections has legs and it's well worth doing.

I don't know if the rest of the community realise this, but I do GuN with two incredible people. BGUK has spawned an amazing regular Nerfing event which has been amazing from the moment he rented a hall and got it started, and OMN is just an organisational genius with a heck load of foresight. I feel fortunate to be associated with them. Sorry if that's a bit gushy, but they're superb. Just sayin'!

I tried out a new piece of gear today. My swarmfire was opened up this morning, the internals slightly re-wired, duct-taped to some card and used as a wrist mounted blaster. I had so much fun with it, along with my Barricade and Rayven.

I declare GuN to be alive and kicking and utterly epic!

DWB are my son's initials. We'll collect it at the next event if that's OK.

Edit: He's just checked his kit and found your missing 12.

I came home with lordsparrows duct tape, a long shot scope, and some socks... and a trial got left and then thrown into the loaner bag

In return, I lost my deAR'ed triad, my big shock ar got bust and someone jammed my 18 in dazzle740s slingfire!

Hmmm....

Well after dismantling the slingfire and removing the cylinder I was able to free your 18 mag, i am quite impressed though to the extent in which the two darts jamming the whole mechanism. But once reassembled the slingfire lives on lol.
The hassard of so many kids I guess.
On a different note it was good to get back to another GuN but by Christ has it grown in size in the two months I've missed lol.
But the freeze tag with added Zombies was an excellent tweak to an already popoular game.
Thanks again to the gents who put the effort in to organise these events every month and long may you continue doing so.

Yes, loved the freeze tag twist but was quite shocked to see zombies come out so early, especially in the summer heat. I did a lot of sitting out and half-arsing it for reasons but you lot must have been dying by the end.

Great time had at GuN9, as said above lots of people there, so lots of targets running around Smile although there was a lot of "What team are you?" from people as there wasn't enough headbands, which led to myself pretending not to hear the question properly as I quickly reloaded knowing they were on the opposition.

First time only using 18 mags (BSUK Magholder worked superb) instead of 36 round drums and I really felt the difference, unfortunately my latest blaster can't fit drums, due to the vector kit, so I may have to re-think for the next one.

Really enjoyed being the Terminator, but when being hit by so many darts it's a little harder to know when you've been hit by a missle (unless it's one of Seiryuu's Nerf balls as they pack a punch), the addition of Zombies to Freeze Tag was a great idea Smile it stopped the initial slow start of usual HvZ.

All in all a very fun day, but I still need to reduce my load out, just because I can carry lots of blasters, doesn't mean I should!

I personally has some problems with Special Farces and they are pretty much all down to me, it's a great idea and most likely it's due to my lack of 'proper' war experience but I think the game that we WANT to play needs to be built up to. There was a lot of rules and mechanics in play, all of which are great, but I think that maybe slowly introducing them once we are all a bit more comfortable might be the way to go. As I said it's most likely me being a noob Smile

Again a great day and thanks to all the organisers for the hard work getting the word out and the increasingly difficult task of running the actual event!

One final thing, I lost the end off my new blaster Sad it's a little black thing with the worker logo on it, it was holding my (make it look less threatening) orange tip in place, I've got the orange tip as someone handed it in, but as you can imagine a little black piece of plastic is a little harder to find!

The Nerf Hyperbounce Balls (or whatever their cheesy name was) have been deemed too rigid and shall be left at home next time. I throw like a wimp when it's not a bludger so any hits from me were far from their full potential. Just wanted to trial them as grenades.

All good feedback. The special farces game is under review at the moment to ensure it works but isn't overly complicated.

The idea behind it is sound though - to try and give the older players something a bit different from the chaos of the rounds with hundreds of kids in, and give the Blackpool/Surrey/Derby/Scottish contingent that travel so far a worthwhile event.

And more head bands/team markers are being sourced - we will admit to being caught out by how popular we have become!

If you want to save money on team ID just buy Snazaroo face paint in your team colours and get the kids/kidults to apply their own "war paint." It's cheaper than even 99p bandanas and people who do not want to use it can still have the old ones. Don't forget baby wipes for cleanup of the face paint though.

It's often "Hand of Saruman" FTW with my team ID. Also Snazaroo is really gentle on skin. I have yet to find a kid allergic to it.

Green is hard to fully remove without leaving a tinge behind, red burns my eyes once sweating begins. Apart from that it's the one pretty much all larpers use and I don't remember any allergies either.

Rab I bought black, brown and white Snazaroo for a fancy dress recently - let me know if you want any in these colours.

Once again it was a trip well worth it for us. Myself and all the family thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and all want to come back for more some day. I tip my hat (if I was wearing one) to BGUK, Old Man Nerf and Jolt for managing to keep the day going with a very large crowd of very excitable players, having been involved with reffing large 60+ games at FDT I know exactly how hard a job it is and on top of that you guys are trying to join in as well and enjoy yourselves as well so must be even harder, so well done all round. I think it speaks volumes that people are willing to travel so far for your games and hospitality   Very Happy

We arrived a bit late after an epic 5hr journey so missed the opening Meatgrinder round but we managed to suit up just in time for the Freeze Tig with Zombies which was amazing fun it must be said and immediately had me running around at full pelt which I soon regretted. After regaining my breath I managed to go on and enjoy the next few games at a slightly slower pace and I really loved the last round of HVZ. Probably the longest I've lasted in an HVZ game with loads of close calls and holding of a few zombie hords at points with a little help from others, it was great fun.

As others have said I think the Special Farces needs work and it's a game we all want to play and I enjoyed it very much as a luddite (never had a shot on the Specials team) but need to bed into it a little as the rules are massive. In my opinion I think it needs simplified a little at first (objectives and traits/abilities) and then once that's mastered start adding the rest. Was a couple of really great battles, I loved backing up BGUK as he dug in and fought off TBR and Dazzle740 as they tried to get in the back corridor, it was raining foam and TBR's Stryfe stings Very Happy

Was good to meet so many Brit Nerfers and put faces to names, special thanks to Tanithlord for helping my good lady out with some batteries for her fearless fire and then selling her one of his Powerbelles, Cheers. Also cheers to Andrew for sorting me out with a couple of his 8 dart cylinders, looking forward to fitting them.

Im sure we'll be back for more Grim Up Nerf another day, Looking forward to it, Cheers everyone.

I agree about the special Farces game! It's a little larpy, which means it'll take a while before the rules etc bed in and become intuituve.

It was great seeing you again, bigal! We love having you and I'm excited to join you for an FDT!
