Voltmeter holder

So having watched FDS’s “How to– Nerf Voltmeter” video a little while back I shamefully looked at my own hotglue efforts, said two “Our Fathers”, three “Hailfires” and swore to be a better modder.

Fast forward a month or so and I proudly present the MK 3 Voltmeter holder.

Designed to fit the voltmeters I bought in bulk from fleabay, it’s laser cut from 5mm acrylic, is designed to be glued inside the shell and has screw ports (untapped) for easy replacement of the voltmeter. The holder is designed for voltmeters measuring 22mm x 14mm x 7mm deep (excluding the circuit board).

I experimented with the design a little, the first version was 6mm deep and I found, once the thickness of the glue was added, it set the voltmeter too low to get completely flush with the surface of the blaster. This version is a fraction slimmer, allowing about 2mm for the thickness of glue and blaster wall and seems to be spot on (although I've yet to glue one into place).

As you can see from the photo, I cut quite a few so I have a lot of spares and can easily cut more. I was having some problems with getting a clean finish due to the alignment of the laser so many of them have a bit of flashing or slight imperfections but nothing that can't be fixed with a file. If anyone thinks they're worth having I'm happy to post them some in exchange for some feedback on the design - preferably those who mod a lot or run events so you can share them out.

Alternatively, if you've got access to a laser cutter I can mail you over the .dxf file.

Which voltmeters are in them?
Clockwork Wino

I checked back and it was actually Amazon I got them:

Mini Green LED Digital Voltmeter Volt Meter Panel 3.3-30V https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B009X.../ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_PIPBxb5R9G02C

They are very cheap but so far haven't faltered, although I've had to resolder a couple of loose wires.

Not sure if they're a standard size, they do match the previous meters I got from a different source.
Clockwork Wino

Just noticed that the ones I had delivered differ slightly to the listing as the screw ports are in a different place.
Franksie

I'd love to give them a try in my stryfe and rapid strike
UKNerfWar

One day I'll dust off my laser cutter and use it for NERFarious purposes.
OldNoob

I will take some, although they look a bit big for my preffered Rapidstrike location.
blindgeekuk

They look very professional!

If you've got a spare holder and voltmeter, i'll take one off your hands, it's one thing Bertha is missing (though I know OldNoob will tell me I don't need one!)
Clockwork Wino

OldNoob, you're quite right, it won't fit under the RS sling point without some sanding. The Mk. 1 version was designed specifically for this but the wall thickness was too thin to easily cut from 5mm. In the picture below it's two 3mm holders glued together and sits just below the surface of the blaster. Had I sanded it down first or used less glue it would have been more precise. If I can find any of the originals I'll send them your way as well.

Blindgeekuk, sadly there's no voltmeters spare, just the holders but I'll send you a bundle for the next GUN.

If people can PM me a postal address I'll chuck some in the post early next week.

My packet arrived in otley 2 days ago, but it took the post office an extra day to deliver me a note saying there was extra postage due. I was in two minds as to whether to go pay the postage - it was a lot for a voltage holder, but at the same time, ClockworkWino had sent me it for free...

I'm glad I did, the package contained 8 of the thciker transaprent ones and 5 of the smaller ones

They look ace, can't wait for my voltmeter to arrive and I can test this properly.
Clockwork Wino

My apologies. I weighed the packages before sending to check the postage costs but clearly I made a mistake. If anyone else has had the same problem, please let me know and I'll make amends.

I'm planning on putting a voltmeter in the Stryfe I'm in the middle of building, it's taking a while due to waiting on parts (mainly a couple of Hellcats and the charger I want from Hobbyking), I was wondering if you believe these to be suitable for this as there's little empty space in the Stryfe?
OldNoob

I got mine, they all needed to be sent large letter not first, remember they have a size AND weight classification now. Anything above 4mm or so thick can't go letter. Don't worry about the £1.50, they were worth it.
They are great little things though. TBR, these would work in the stock block of a Stryfe, it's one of the few fiat surfaces. The other option is the flat space under the rear of the jam door, which will take the narrower 2 wire meters. That spot isn't suited to these excellent little mounts. See my voltmeter video for how to make mounts.

That was the video that made my mind up about using one in my build Smile I hadn't thought about the second location you mentioned above, when my voltmeter finally arrives (from ebay) I'll have to check the size and see if it fits there.

Clockwork Wino, do you have any left and if so would you be kind enough to send me one? Even if it doesn't fit the voltmeter I have already purchased I'd happily buy a new one to fit this.
blindgeekuk

Yeha, the £1.50 postage charge is a no brainer, they are great and I didn't expect you to send so many...

TBR - I'll give you some on saturday if your at GuN

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to make it to GuN until September, it keeps clashing with other things.

Luckily for me OldNoob as already offered to send me one, if I was able to make it to GuN I would save him the trouble and have the one that you have offered.

Hopefully I'll have got my new primary finished by September Smile

Could you spare a few for me as mine got lost in the post?  If mine show up i can post some to tbr no problems
Dazzle740

I have just received mine and was very generous with the quantities, and of both sizes too. TBR your welcome to taking which ever fits best in your preferred location.
Clockwork Wino

Okay, I've been back to the laser cutter today and run a few more. They're the 5mm variety so they'll need a little sanding to fit under the RS sling point but should work on most other flat areas without modification.

I've had a few people PM me for holders so they'll be on their way shortly.
Franksie, I'll send some on to you this weekend (and I promise not to screw up the postage again!).
TBR, if you'd like to PM me an address I'll send some up.

That's perfect, no need for any postage Smile
NewportNerfer113

Thanks CW. They turned up this morning 😀
Gordy

Awesome idea.  I wonder if they could be 3d printed as well?
blindgeekuk

My voltmeter, from the amazon link earlier in the thread, arrived today... fits great in either of the holder designs.

Now, how do I wire it in? Currently I've tested it by putting the two wires from the voltmeter into the red / black wires ports on the balance cable on the lipo...
NewportNerfer113

I have assumed that the voltmeter should be wired into the battery cables before they reach any switches or other components so as not to give a false reading.
Ninjutsu7

Just got mine in the post, fitting great, and I got more than I expected ^_^ This is the kind of thing this forum is great for, thank you!
Dazzle740

Now unfortunately I had already ordered a voltmeter through eBay before seeing this thread. CW is a very generous and sent me both types of holder he has made and more than one of each too!! Well the meter has arrived and to my joy it fits into CW holders an absolute treat!!!
Thanks again CW let the rapid strike build commence again.
tbr

Just a quick thanks for the voltmeter holder, I used mine in my most recent stryfe build and it worked perfectly. Voltmeter in holder held in place with a single screw, no messy epoxy putty or glue etc required.
