POSTPONED - Battle of Britain - expressions of interest

So I'm finishing up the final details at the moment but need to gain some sense of commitment before spending a not inconsiderable amount of money on this.

I'll present what I've got so far below. Have a read and then think seriously about whether you can commit to this. If you have any objections (and particularly about the cost) I politely suggest you keep them to yourself and go away and put in as much effort as I have to arrange a cheaper alternative, then come back to the forum with your proposal.

Please bear in mind this may still not happen if I don't think we can cover costs. I'm aiming to break even on this.

Date: 23-25 September which is the next date the site is available for exclusive use.

Where: 55 acre site south of Birmingham which we would have exclusive use of. It has a mixture of woodland and open ground.

What: 2 nights camping, use of the site and the toilet/shower facilities, food for Saturday night, 100 new darts, and 2 days of Nerf fun

Who: open to all. Under 18's will need an accompanying adult ON SITE AT ALL TIMES. That's just the way it is. DBS checks do not feature on my plan.

Cost: currently aiming to do this for 30 per person for the weekend. Again, I'm not interested in discussing this - it is what it is. Take a look at the thread on Larp costs if you think this is unreasonable, then organise a cheaper event for us....

Please only post below IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT COMING. I don't want the thread cluttered with 'I'd come but I'm washing my hair' posts. Thanks.

Will add another post at the end of the thread with more details on why this is postponed.
Boff

Very soft interest here. It's within our range but season fatigue and the fact that Future's End is the weekend afterwards makes our attendance shaky. By our, I mean at least 3 of us. I'll have a chat with people later this evening and see what pops out.

On the darts front, I assume that we can bring our own darts in addition to the ones provided?
Tanithlord

I will put it on to the Cataclysm people for you but will can I ask what the facilities are like on site such as showers/water/food/first aid.

Also are darts provided and what games will be played

James
old_man_nerf

Yes to bringing your own darts as long as we are in agreement on the varieties in use (which I' m sure won't be a problem for most people as we generally shy away from particular brands).

There is a toilet and shower block on site.

First aid is up for consideration. I've done some training to a level that is accepted by Scouting.. It'll be on my risk assessment and documented nearer the time.

Games - I haven't had chance to get that far yet! Was waiting to see what sort of venue we could find.

The costs for the weekend include a 'starter package' of 100 darts for those without the luxury of their own dart pool.

Edit: I'll merge this into the original info later and add some details regarding transport options when I'm back at my PC.
UKNerfWar

I'm in. You can count on at least one other from me.

I'm also willing to ferry two others from the London area for a small contribution to petrol.
blindgeekuk

I'm in

In terms of facilities - fully equippped kitchen (at least 2 ovens in it), an indoor dining area, showers/toilets which are wheelcahair accessible, Outdoor 'dry' shelter (basically the tin roof eating area thing that Drac uses at his SENC wars), brick bbqs

Old_man_nerf has put a lot of time and effort into finding this venue, and I for one appreciate his work. Cheers Mate!
Tanithlord

Thats fine I will be coming and I will see who I can drag along, Will be good to see all the flywheels in the first few days then springers on the Sunday when people forget to bring spare batteries Smile

My batteries last about 5 days so you can forget that unless it rains. Oh and touch screen 12v chargers.

I am considering attending, possibly with +2, depending on work, its do able from a distance perspective. I will be supporting the event, regardless of attendance. Boff I can pick you up if you want to join team South. Flag design to be decided- my current pick of choice.

Just to clarify. I have costed for the campsite only. This gives access to the bathroom facilities. If we want to use the kitchen area/dining area there is an additional cost for this.
OldNoob

Real men eat C rations or BBQ....
Franksie

Steak > Biscuits Brown!!!
blindgeekuk

An additional charge? boo!

Do we still get the bbq's and dry shelter, and can we have camp fires? If so, i'm cool with not having the kitchen area.
FDT

I don't camp - any hotels nearby?

(Actually I camp at a music festival once a year but that's my lot).
Dustybin

I will be able to attend if I don't have to camp because I live close (about 20 mins away I am guessing) but I will be attending on the Friday, Saturday and probably the Sunday (just to meet people). Is it 30pp or per group?
OldNoob

My hotel-
FDT

V nice ON, V nice.

Camping is not compulsory for the weekend. Maybe dustybin can airbnb some rooms for the weekend Smile

Cost is 30 per person as I said in the OP. I'm not willing to negotiate a day rate for those not choosing camp. The main cost we are bearing is for the exclusive use of the site and that is being enjoyed by all attendees.
UKNerfWar

I can supply additional tents and camp beds for those of you who are indoor cats. If you need anything specific let me know otherwise I'll just bring a variety of stuff.
bigal123

Been having a think and a chat about this and I'm definitely up for it. Would be myself and my 13 yr old son (also a FDT veteran). We're happy campers with plenty of gear  Very Happy
blindgeekuk

I can supply a gazebo and a big tunnel tent to act as a HQ if we have space in a car
dabrad89

I'm about 80% on this and I have a tent wooooooo!
old_man_nerf

Having talked through the event on the Discord chat the consensus of opinion is to postpone the event till spring 2017.

Thank you to everyone who expressed an interest and showed enthusiasm for the event. It will happen. Just with added spring sunshine and bluebells rather than murky September weather Smile

I'd like to open the thread up a bit now, so for all those who read the post and decided 'it's not for me' now is your chance to add some feedback on what would entice you to come. Positive solutions to the issues raised always welcome.

Discussion on costs are moot - if we can reduce it we will but this is not worth discussing at this time. I'm more interested in issues such as transportation/accommodation/perception that we'll all be blasting each other with 150fps Nerf cannons sort of thing that we can work on solving....
Franksie

i'll be there OMN
blindgeekuk

Being privy to some of the discussion last night, I know there are aspects in the work to attract people Smile

For me, this event is a chance to meet you all, obviously I don't drive, so getting down south to a war is impossible.
Its a chance to camp, something I've not had much chance to do since having kids
Its a chance to see how others do wars - the suggestion has been that each group shows off their own distinct game type
Its a chance to see the masterwork blaster you lot own

Things I'd like to try:
An 'duff blasters' round - so see how people cope with unmodded nstrike gear like a deploy or recon or maverick

I take it the idea of responding to that game type with the order to draw foam melee weapons will be met with derision? Razz I mean my 39" LARP safe sword will out perform most stock Mavericks.

Seriously though, my main problem with a 'Duds' round would be being able to source enough stuff for everyone to use. Then again, I run a pretty lean collection and I suppose people UKNW can just fill a van. Very Happy
OldNoob

If you are doing awfuls then the key rules must apply, you bring your own Awful, it must cost under 5-10 and should suck as hard as possible. A prize is usually awarded to the worst performing awful.
No Awful no play. Those people not playing do the pointing, laughing and voting on worst awful.
Boff

Or I could just yellow jacket up and marshal the hilarity? Ya know, put the attitude and set of lungs to good use. Razz
UKNerfWar

My favourite type of awful round is the 'Hunger Games' style. Everyone brings an awful and they all get put in a big pile in the centre of the arena. Whistle blows and everybody rushes in to get their blaster or at least, whichever blaster is left. There are many tactics to choose in this game and hilarity is guaranteed.
Davidov

I missed most of this or I'd have tried to join the chat last night Sad

I'll be there unless there is a very good reason stopping me from being there.

Mainly dropping in to say I'd be happy to bring the bar for free as I'd be playing and open it up as extra indoor space and bar in the evenings as opposed to all day like I'd do at other events. I may also be working with a caterer at that point if wanted, but that's hush hush for the moment.

So for those worrying about lack of luxuries there is the possibility of hot meals and cold drinks in large furnished tents for you outside of play time.

Also I hope I can bring an awful that cost more than that but was made purely for looking good at larps and performs.... awful.
NewportNerfer113

Disappointed that it's delayed. Wasn't planning on confirming my attendance until I could ensure I had the time off work. Typically that came through today.  Definitely up for the spring one though.

Like the idea of an awful. What about a cheap that's been modded to perform badly? Not too badly... just enough to be funny.

Is that the same as a "free bar" 🍺😂😜

I'm still wondering about it  being rained off 🤔 no way could you plan for an outdoor event up here. Any thoughts on a contingency?

Might be worth splitting the teams into factions with each one taking a turn to run and marshal a game.
old_man_nerf

Sorry folks, it just made sense when we talked it out the other evening to postpone till the spring.

It will happen, and once we've done it once the ground work will be there to repeat the experience for foreseeable future (assuming we all can stand the sight of each other after a weekend event Smile ).
Baldrick

I was going to work out my transport to the (probable, based on google search with the information given in the op) site to see if it is feasible for me (last greencloaks event I was using a sack barow for my camping and Nerf gear).   Will definitely be interested in a spring event (assuming it is not one of the may bank holiday weekends due to larp timetables).
blindgeekuk

Just because we're delaying this one, doesn't mean people couldn't find a campsite to meet up at and have a days nerfing

Have a search for a 'rally' field in your area, and we might be able to have a less professional event. I'd be up for a weekend camping and nerfing regardless of whether its a britnerf special!
Northwind

Too late to the party; I can never guarantee stuff like this because of work but if I can make it, I will. Whether it's this year or next. Not last though, that'd be a hassle.
UKNerfWar

Some people just lack commitment.
Davera

The initially weekend didn't work for me so I am glad it has been delayed.

I am very much up for this, just need to make sure the weekend works with work.
dabrad89

With Soo much time in hand can we plan for maybe two weekends in a row and choose the best one weatherise ?
old_man_nerf

I'd be surprised if we found a suitable site that would take two bookings from us and only charge us for the one we decided to use at short notice...
Tanithlord

I think the time to look in to sights is good however, I do think that one thing that should happen is that we have a Dart pool so that all the Darts can be checked and known to be safe.

In terms of Price that will of course be a deciding factor as you have to think of all the costs people dont see such as advertising, fule and time costs of looking at sites. But as opposed to a LARP system cost will be lower as propes and such would not have to be brought or have to pay for npcs or crew.
OldNoob

The darts issue is in hand. We may well run all FVJ for this event and provide all darts. We have already sorted the safety aspects.
blindgeekuk

I've emailed about 10 sites with rally fields that we could camp on and run games on. Only one has come back so far with a definitive no, which is a pity, as it'd have worked out at 8 a person without food/darts - unfortunately they wanted a guarantee of 100 people!

I've been requesting quotes based on 20 players, on the same weekend as Old Man Nerf had, 23rd-25th. No food, no darts. It's looking like about 20 if I can pull it off (which shows you the bargain Old Man Nerf had got)
UK Foam

I and a few friends would be interested!

I bring the bar for free, but you bring the mead!   #larpersgetit

I'll keep a list of sites when I next look around for my own reasons, they'll be centred down south ish, but some will be central. Still hoping to get in with the more Nerf skirmish geared larp event before the end of the year if site can be had, so expand the britnerf calendar and repertoire.
