My RapidStrike Shoots Fishy

Evening all,

After another outing at BB5 and having another opportunity to use The RaggedStrike, I'm still having some issues with it wildly fishtailing about half of its darts.  Before I rip it apart later in the week, what type of things could cause this within the motor housing? The most obvious to me is wonky or misaligned flywheels.  But is there anything else I should check?

Cheers as always
Franksie

Are you using rifled barrel?  Fluted barrel from a yellow N strike blaster will help a little
OldNoob

Fluted barrel, wheels exactly matched +/- 0.03g and +/-0.2mm plus centred on the motor shaft +/-0.1mm is my usual tolerance.
Any imperfections in 120+ fps blasters will be magnified. I also only use heavier waffle darts now.

I had exactly the same problem with my RS fish tails all over the place, I think the issue in part was with some of the darts being slightly more worn and some of them being a bit wet and muddy.

Oh and thanks for the tip I will have to go check the older blasters and cannibalise some barrels!!

good info , thanks. having dropped the IMRs into my Rapid Red I noticed crazy fishtailing and i know i'm nowhere near 120fps on that. I did wonder if I might be misaligned flywheels.

So.... afte pulling it apart. Everything sort of looks OK.  Checked motor and cage alignment. Checked barrell and cage alignment. All looks good. Can't see why it's doing the fishy thing.

Only one cheap option really... Brassing it... only took 90 mins last night. Initial tests are good but further testing is needed over the next few days.

Just a pic of the initial offering up of the brass. I spent more time tidying up all the edges and fitting it in place.

Oh and it's my one year Britnerfday.  On the forum a year aleady. How time flies.

Was going to rip the barrel off an old raider which has a nice long fluted barrel. Would be interested in the outcome on the brass option though before I start cannibalizing working stuff!

Please let me know about how well the brass barrel works @NewportNerfer113!

Not a fan of brassing. Higher build precision and better ammunition will keep your on target velocity up and actually solve the problem. All you are doing is robbing velocity out the system and allowing off centre darts caused by a physical error to bang around in a tube.

Thanks OldNoob, completely agree that brassing isn't ideal.  However, of the current options available to me, this was the cheapest at present.  I'll trial run it at the next Bristol Blast to see if the problem as gone away.  This issue I was finding was that not every dart was fishy, which leads me to think that it's the darts.  When I opened the RS up, I did shave down the dart ramps as they were close to the wheels (but weren't interfering with them), I was going to take the wheels off and weigh and measure them, but I didn't want to risk damaging the wheels or breaking the motors.

I've done some minimal testing with elite darts and results are positive - however, if the darts are causing the issue then I'll likely not know until I test it at the next war.  More testing will be completed - I'll be sure to record it and post a link.

If the hack job I've done doesn't work out, no problem, I'll try again... but if it is working and I've lost some FPS (bearing in mind that I couldn't accurately chrono it anyway because of fishy darts), then I'll be happy.
