Leeds Indoor Event -Sat 30th Jan, Headingley, 1:30pm

Hi ali, i'm currently trying to get an answer out of various potential venues in leeds, in the headingley/horsforth/lawnswood area, as to whether their halls are free on Sat 30th Jan.

This is like my only free weekend in the next two months, and i'm fed up of being couped up inside over winter unable to mess around with my blasters.

What i'm thinking is an indoor event, with stock/better than stock blasters, 2 or so to cover hall hire, and bring a cardboard box or something to use as stuff to hide behind. Hire the hall for 3 hours, have a meet and greet time, couple of games of various types, and then tidy up.

Main issue is getting answers from venues over Christmas, but I wanted to post this to see what could of interest there would be.
blindgeekuk

I have about 30 pairs of safety glasses so that's one aspect covered

I have several boxes of unmodified blasters that are fine for loaners

I have about 800 darts: elite and koosh, so depending on how many come, we could probably do a FDT style "here's 30 darts for you to use during the even'
old_man_nerf

Hi. I'm up for that. If I think of any potential locations I'll drop you a PM.

I've a few outdoor locations lined up for when Yorkshire eventually dries out in the spring.
OldNoob

I can donate darts if required, 200 Koosh and 200 ACC.
blindgeekuk

Cheers guys

Is Sun 31st a better day for people, there's a video game event on in the centre and pretty much all the venues i've had a response from are booked up.

Thanks for the dart offer. I've about 50 acc ones, can't say i'm impressed by them. Will let you know once I nail down my venue an date
OldNoob

They are fine in springers and pistols, hopeless in flywheels though! I have some in my dart pool.
We usually just say bring the darts you need, don't expect more than half back.

Depends on when in the day. Sunday mornings are usual spent watching my son play football.
blindgeekuk

Finally, a venue has got back who has availability. Not the biggest, but in budget and should be fine for upto about 12 of us

Sat 30th Jan, Roundhay Scout Hut, 2

I have until next week to confirm the booking, so could do with knowing how many are likely to turn up asap
The Dark Kitten

I'd most definatly see if  i can turn up.
I may be form Manchester but nothing can stop me !
Except for train fares. How much that'd cost i have no idea.
blindgeekuk

Train fares are expensive, but coach fares on the other hand are fairly cheap
The Dark Kitten

blindgeekuk wrote:

Didn't think of that!
OldNoob

Tell me if you need darts, I checked stores, I only have 200 gen 3 Koosh available this month. There are more in transit but they won't get here in time.
The Dark Kitten

Any times thought out?
It's just if I book tickets now I get a decent discount rather than on the day.
Not rushing you if you don't have times set out you don't.
blindgeekuk

At the moment, i'm thinking either 12 to 3 or 1 to 4, though I need to know what my daughters ballet class times are post xmas break.

I'm going to give a few other venues a chance to reply. The current one in roundhay is two buses from the centre, whereas I thought it was only one...
Justajolt

I'm definitely coming if it's on Saturday 30th! I'm also prepared to pick people up from bus or train stations if that's helpful.
blindgeekuk

Cheers justajolt!

If I can make it then I can give you a lift. We'll go through Otley on our way to Roundhay.
FDT

I'm running Nerf parties that day so can't make the 4 hour trip down from Edinburgh but hope it goes well Smile
Seiryuu

If this is happening, I am totally in and I may be able to get others onboard too. Can anyone fill a Pyragon though because I just can't get the disks anymore.
blindgeekuk

My ex-wifes son had a disc blaster that she said she was getting rid of, will try and get it off her to get the ammo for you.

Got a response from a location in headingley, bigger venue, much easier to get to on buses, but they haven't given me a price yet...
Seiryuu

I live in the hydepark area so that's even better for me. I might also be interested in the blaster, depending on what it is. Disks are oddly underrated.
Do note that the Pyragon takes 40 though.
blindgeekuk

I've asked her, but can't make any promises. Are the Chinese discs from ebay any good?

There's a couple of venues in Hyde Park area i'm looking at, i'm hoping once people are back at work tomorrow I migh start hearing things.
OldNoob

China discs are fine, totally safe. Order today if you want them for the event though.
Justajolt

Two more people who I know joining in!
blindgeekuk

So at the moment theres:

Blindgeekuk + son, maybe +2 if my mate actually wakes up on a weekend
Old_Man_Nerf + son
The Dark Kitten
Justajolt +2
Seiryuu

I'm trying to find a venue that should allow about 20 of us to run around, but happy to have more this first time so we can meet and discuss what we can do over the coming months once yorkshire dries out (if I dries out!)
old_man_nerf

Can you add my son to the list? Assuming supervised and Nerf enthusiastic kids are OK to come along....
blindgeekuk

I've editted the count to add him old_man_nerf.

I'll be dragging my 16 year old along as it's about the only exercise he gets, plus he can see, unlike me, so he stands a chance of hitting some of you!

Some of the prices people want for halls in the leeds area are crazy, especially given the size of these halls.
Seiryuu

blindgeekuk wrote:

Make it clear you're not hosting a wedding.
blindgeekuk

OK, 24 venues enquired with, 6 have yet to respond.

Of those 24, the ones who are free on Sat 30th Afternoon are:

St Michaels Church Youth Hall - about the size of 2 badminton courts, a few mins walk from headingley centre (opposite Original Oak) and theres a lot of buses that stop nearby

Roundhay Scout Hut - probably the biggest and cheapest, but a bugger to get to on buses

Oblong/Woodhouse community Centre - a very small square room, thats expensive to hire

Leeds Youth Service, Lazer centre, Armley - supposedly about 2 badminton courts in size, the only venue that was really receptive, and they've also suggested we use their off road bike tracks once it gets warmer/drier

Morley Leisure Centre - a big 4 court sports hall, but comes with a much higher cost to hire. Surprisingly easy to get to

Otley Scout Hut - incredibly cheap, but is literally the size of a badminton court
OldNoob

I would book that youth centre,or the youth hall/scouts, that way any hire money's spent are going back into the community.
2 badminton courts will support 10 adult players fine. The youth centre may let you use corridors and other parts of the building too.
old_man_nerf

I'm going to vote for the place in Armley. Would be good to foster relations with somewhere that can offer outside space as well.
blindgeekuk

The armley one has been incredibly responsive, and is the only one who didn't seem at all phased by it being a Nerf war, instead I got a "cool, I'd join you if I had one", and like you say Old_Man_Nerf, the option of outdoor space when its warmer is great.

In terms of buses, the First Leeds 85, that goes from F7 by Mecca bingo outside the bus station, drops you off almost outside the centre. Though that is only 1 an hour, its about a 10 to 15 minute walk from the other bus routes nearby

I'm off down on saturday to double check its suitable.
blindgeekuk

Venue hunting is on going... I didn't get down to the armley one due to car troubles, and i'm still struggling to get hold of the headingley ones booking person.

Old_man_nerf and me agree though that we'd rather use a less than ideal venue this time and get better organised for next time, as that means we can put names to faces and discuss what we want to do with the wars.

On a separate note, i'll be bringing:

Hopefully modded by then:
Eat, rampage, roughcut, stampede, triad

Unmodded:
Doominator, fearless fire, demolisher, slingfire, sledgefire, firestrike, jolt, flipfury, 2 retaliator (pistol form), stockade, 4 strongarms, 2 hammershots

Other bits that people might care about:
36 safety goggles, blasterparts banana clips, dump pouch, Chinese cheap 12 round clips, imr's...

My thinking is, there might be something you want to try out
Seiryuu

I think there might be.
I can bring bows, a Titan, a Wildfire, Magni and 4 of the BOOMco Whipblast (yes, it is that good) as well as my own personal Pyragon and stuff.
Don't really want to bring the lot but I can if I must. Except for my Nitefinders, they aren't touching an indoor war because I'm not comfortable with that level of power in a confined space.
Northwind

Nothing to add other than can't make this one but could well be up for a road trip later in the year if it becomes regular- good to see all this!

Might be worth trying universities and colleges for sports halls? Especially out of term time
blindgeekuk

Cheers Northwind

The Uni sports halls are run by a private company as far as I can tell, and are expensive, even with a staff or student discount - we've got a coupole of lines of enquiry on them though just in case

Chances are this will be in Headingley this month, with Justajolt enquring about a venues he's used before for next time, and with us having the option of the outdoor off road tracks once it warms up a bit. We're certainly not devoid of options locally

If anyone who is coming has a mega blaster, I wouldn't mind having a go with one!
haloxxbilly

I might be able to come, will have to see closer to the time. Is there space left?
blindgeekuk

We haven't set a limit haloxxbilly, this one is as much a put a face to local names, and planning future wars, as it is a chance to shoot each other. At the moment I think there's only about 10 to 15 of us
Justajolt

I have a venue confirmed which we can use for at no cost if needed on the 30th or another time. The guy who's in charge of the facility is happy for us to use it and I have a key.

It's got one main hall, lots of smaller rooms and there are 5 entrances. The building also has grounds including a car-park, a shed and a grassy area including shrubbery.

It's on Toftshaw Ln, Bradford BD4 (South East of Bradford) near Tong High School. There are buses which go past from Bradford Interchange.

I'm still waiting to hear back about a larger venue which is near Farsley (in between Leeds and Bradford).

I have a Cyclone Shock! I've also ordered some inserts for firing Elites, which should be fun if they arrive on time!
blindgeekuk

Argh/lol, I was just going to post that i'd sorted the venue for the 30th!

I've booked us into the youth hall at headingley parish church, 1:30 till 4:30. It's about a 2 minute walk from the bus stop, the Church is opposite The Skyrack and Original Oak pubs, and the youth hall is a sidestreet over.

Those venues sound great though Justajolt, we're discuss them in more detail on the saturday.
OldNoob

A SHRUBBERY!

It sounds like you guys scored a great venue, well done!
UKNerfWar

Any updates on this?
Seiryuu

2 posts back we got details on exactly where and when the war will be, I don't expect much else needs to be discussed right away, unless someone can fill my Pyragon (willing to pay).
blindgeekuk

I actually thought i'd done a more detailed post, but obviously I forgo to post it. I'll do one today when I get chance, with map, buses etc
blindgeekuk

Details

OK, so heres the war details in a bit more in depth:

Event is Sat 30th Jan

We are meeting at St Michaels - Headingley Parish Church, at their youth Hall, which is behind the main church, in Kings Place, just off St Michaels Road. There is some parking outside the youth hall. St Michaels church is the big church opposite the Skyrack and Original Oak pubs. Postcode for sat navs is LS6 3AW

We have the hall from 1:30 pm till 4:30 pm. they are fairly strict about the times, and I've been told we can't get in before then, and that we definitely have to be out by 4:30. I reckon this means that by the time we get in, chat, set things up, shoot, tidy up, we'll get about 2 hours of play.

Headingley is well served for buses, either from the centre, or from other locations. There is a bus stop literally outside the church and on the opposite side of the road. Headingley is served by the following bus routes:

Outside:
1 Holt Park - Beeston
6 Holt Park - City Centre
28 Adel - Crown Point
29 Beckett Park - Woodhouse
97 Guiseley - City Centre
x84 Otley/Ilkley/Skipton - City Centre

Couple of streets away:
38 Gledhow - White Rose Centre
39 Beckett Park - Kirkstall
91 Halton Moor - Pudsey

By the cricket ground:
19 Ireland Woodhouse - East Garforth
19A Tinshill - East Garforth
56 Moor Grange - Whinmoor

One of the key things I want to do with this event is figure out how many of us there are in the Leeds area, where we are, what stuff we have, and what we want to do. E.g. if it turns out we are all in the north of Leeds, that might alter where we choose for venues in the future.
I'm as interested in chatting, and seeing others mods, than I am in getting shot by darts...
One of the major things we have to discuss, is the location Justajolt has found for us to use in the future - Justajolt, if you can grab some pictures of the two locations that would be good. I'm going to get some of this armley location as well.
Because of that, and because the venue isn't ideal in size (but is pretty damn good in location), I don't want to impose a limit on the number of people, or charge for people coming. I'll take the hit on the venue hire this time, to get this local community moving, and instead have a donations jar - bung in a couple of quid if you want.

Couple of requests:
Don't bring anything super over powered. If you've got a stryfe modded to hit 200fps, its not really safe for use in this location...
Don't wear anything super tactical. Not this time anyway... We don't want to scare the locals on our first time!
Is anyone allergic to nuts? I'll be grabbing some snacks/drinks.
Bring a pistol, and a primary

Current Attendees:
blindgeekuk + son
dan (blindgeekuk friend)
cam (blindgeekuk friend) + potentially his girlfriend
old_man_nerf + son
Justajolt + 2 friends
Seiryuu

Potentials:
The Dark Kitten (coming from Manchester)
simon (blindgeekuk friend)
haloxxbilly (coming from london)

Location Map:
Seiryuu

I will be bringing my roughly 10kg, AR removed, brassed and barrel shortened Nitefinder that shoots about 100ft but will not use it outside of controlled demonstrations with inanimate targets, if that's ok.
And how do you feel about stock Titans? There's an insane amount of power behind them but the surface area of impact is huge due to the dart in question, meaning that they won't hurt anyone unless they're caught off guard and fall over when shot.

There're also a ton of ex-assassins' guild members from the uni, I'll see if I can get the ones who aren't dicks involved. Which reminds me, are we solely using guns or are the full range of assassins' weapons allowed (inc. swords and plushie "attack animals")?
blindgeekuk

For now, just dart blasters, but again, thats one of those things I want to discuss on the day - if people are wanting to cosnider melee in the future?

I'd been pondering how i'd answer a question like the Titan, since i've never seen one in the flesh... I reckon if we can build a target for people to demonstrate their effectiveness, then cool.
Seiryuu

So bring it and see? Sounds good to me!

Don't think I have anything else questionable besides my bow and, while I'd love to be able to use that at a war sometime, the confines of indoor nerfing don't seem the best place for it. It's more of an outdoor sniper weapon. And I have no idea what the max power output of it actually is because it's half springer half stringer and other people are more effective with it than I am, suggesting that there's a good deal of user variation to be accounted for.
I won't be bringing that because, as much as I'd love to, it's not appropriate and is too unwieldy to transport just for show.
old_man_nerf

I'm just going to pack a few blasters and see who turns up with what.

If we can try a few contained games I think that would be a good idea. My son wants to see some action Smile

I'll have a look at some game types that might be adapted to fit the space - assuming we just have the main hall?

We ought to follow up with a full on game at the venue justajolt had found fairly soon though, to keep the momentum going.
The Dark Kitten

I'm most definitely still interested but have a few creases to clear out first
Justajolt

Stock titans with their big stock darts are pretty tame (I had one and sold it on). Like being hit with a pool noodle. Any mods making it able to fire elite darts make it VERY powerful.
old_man_nerf

I'm happy for people to bring their ridiculously powerful blasters as I'm interested in the potential and how far the designs and mods can be pushed.

As long as restraint is shown in using them in games, which should be easy to spot in the space we have.

For the sake of common sense we can then agree an upper limit on fps for future events, but unless we have something to guage this against we are just setting artifical limits.
Boff

If it helps, the absolute cap is the UK Home Office's lethality threshold guidelines which kick in at 1.35J for fully automatic and 2.5J for single shot or semi-auto. That's 179FPS and ~230FPS respectively assuming a 1g dart.

I selected 130FPS for Green Cloaks because they don't mandate eye protection. I got there when I did the Kinetic Energy Density (KE/unit area) maths for an Elite dart versus the results of impacts on the eye. The shape and size of an Elite dart at 130FPS is enough to make your eye sting, water and generally cause discomfort but it's about 75% of the KED required for you to start getting serious damage (read permanent). Of course, if you're mandating eye-pro then take the stoppers off and go right the way up to the legal limits. Very Happy
blindgeekuk

I'll be bringing safety glasses, with the issues with my own eyesight I take eye safety quite seriously...

However, without a way to measure the fps, its all a bit moot, and my main concern becomes, "if you miss someonne, is it likely to damage building and/or hurt innocent bystanders"
old_man_nerf

Agree about eye protection being a necessary thing regardless of velocities. You only get one pair of eyes and I want to keep mine working for as long as possible!

With regard to damage, again I was assuming anything high powered was going to be used in a controlled way against nominated targets just as a demonstration.

Once you get into a game play situation there is a remote chance a stray dart might hit something critical but I'd have thought this was a low risk. And are we playing outside? There is a car park marked on the map - are we considering this in bounds for games?
The Dark Kitten

Looks like ill be able to make it unless something abrupt happens.
blindgeekuk

Dark Kitten: Yay!

Finally got down to the armley youth center site, it' pretty good, decent sized room, plus a couple of side areas, with an option to use their outside graffiti art area an surrounding side paths, to give a full indoor/outdoor option
Justajolt

Having some car trouble, should be fixed by next Saturday, I may not be able to provide a shuttle between transport hubs and the location.

I will still come no matter what on public transport, but I'll confirm by Friday if I'm able to offer a car to make life easier.
old_man_nerf

Just been sorting out which blasters to pack with my son as we won't have time during the week to do it.

Actually quiet excited now.

With regard to lifts/etc. If people are coming by train/bus then the number 1 stops outside the station, runs through town and up headingly road with a stop about 20 metres from the venue.

Much, much easier than navigating Leeds inner ring road and one way system.....
The Dark Kitten

You can add a plus one to my name I'm bringing along a cling-on (no star trek reference)
He'll be a laugh but I doubt he'll take much wich is fine i'll throw him some stuff.

I'll be bringing a Rhinoed Stryfe (prob  on 2s), German Metal Hammershot and a BSUK 7K sidestrike.
Is all of that ok?
OldNoob

I would suggest that nearly everything I have seen people say they are bringing to use in the game, as opposed to show off, is under 130fps. There's nothing there that should damage the buildings paint etc.
Totally agree about eye pro, I wear mine even when it's not mandated.
I am really pleased to see how many people are committed to this game. If anyone needs some ideas for a code of conduct etc my groups Facebook page has them.

Cool with me, i'm interested in seeing what the metal kit is like, as i'm tempted to get that, and the 3d printed 7 round barrel for one of my hammershots.

I'm pleased with how things have come together, and if the location Justajolt has got for next time is as good as it sounds then i'll be even happier!

And a big thanks for that code of conduct, I was trying to do one this morning, the only thing i've got extra in mine is 'no touching someone else's blaster without their permission'.

EDIT #2:

I should have about 600 new gen 3 koosh, plus a bag of about 400 used elite/gen 2 koosh for the event.

EDIT

Please don't double post. If you want to bump a thread, copy your old post into your new one and delete the first one. Plus, if you're quoting text that's longer than your response then you're doing it wrong.

FDT

Wish you all the best with this. So disappointed I can't make it/bring a crew down from Edinburgh.

Once Saturday is out of the way and you get a plan for moving forward, I'll look out for future dates and try and organise a posse to head down.

Also look forward to any pics/video of the event and the venue itself Smile
Rab

Pics would be cool.
Nerf home internationals soon ?
UKNerfWar

I was hoping to make this one but I'm afraid something has come up.

I hope you all have an awesome time and I look forward to coming to the next one.

I want to see pictures!
Justajolt

I've got a car again. If anyone needs ferrying from transport hubs with lots of kit, pm me!
blindgeekuk

540 fresh gen 3 koosh... they take a surprisingly disappointing amount of space when packed like that. there's another 60 currently in various blasters around my house to test the heads...
Boff

How is the yellow foam working out for you? I tried it and it was disappointing to say the least. Have they made improvements since then? Smile
blindgeekuk

The yellows are the first gen 3 ones I got, and I went with yellow so I could actually see them once I fired. Downside to being pretty blind, blue darts disappear!

I've put some thru the eat, fearless fire, stampede, roughcut (gone back to old springs), and triad, and they are fine, i've certainly not noticed any less performance than the gen 2s (blue and dark green) or the standard elite darts I have.

Only blaster where they seem to suck is the elite cam
Northwind

The gen 1 yellow was terrible wasn't it... I've got some of all gen 3 the colours on the way just out of curiosity, bw reckons they're all the exact same spec... But this we have heard before.
old_man_nerf

So do we need to bring any darts at the weekend or would you just like a contribution towards those ones?

And I've worked out a few game types to play although some of them will depend on what access we have within the building.
blindgeekuk

I'll bring all the darts, there's over 550 in that box now, and my 'normal' darts bag has at least 200 gen 2 koosh, and a load of elites.
blindgeekuk

Initial Conclusion: YEAH!

We didn't use all the koosh, though Dark Kitten shredded a fair few!

Venue was a little small, but usable, we got a lot of games in

Everyone had a BIG selection of blasters

We'll be doing it again next month, probably in Tong

Attendance was only 9 of us, 2 of my mates cancelled due to illness, the other is just unreliable...
Justajolt

I agree! It was indeed "bare proper sickage bled" to use the modern youth vernacular.

I'm looking forward to next month already.

Thanks for making that happen, Blindgeek!
OldNoob

Well done to all of you, it's difficult to do, you got good numbers for a first event and everyone had a good time.

I am going to put my mod hat on quickly and lock the planning thread, feel free to start a "Post War Hype" thread so we can all join in. This can be in general Nerf discussion or wars.

EDIT

Topic locked, go start the post game thread!
