Grim Up Nerf 8, Sat 13th Aug, 12:30 onwards, Farsley

It might be the school holidays... but that doesn't stop it being Grim Up Nerf!

Grim Up Nerf 8, Saturday August 13th, 12:30pm until 5:00pm, Farsley

What do Yorkshire folk do when it's summer? Well, other than complain that it's too warm, we play Nerf!

For August's event, we're returning to the bigger venue at Farsley, with its dual corridors, central hall area, side rooms, and huge outside area. We know from experience that the venue results in fast paced games,, and we'll be adapting some of our standard games to take advantage of this, so expect multi objective based team games, alongside our usual fare like infection and lockdown.

Please remember, our loaner box has changed - we'll only be bringing front-loaders (such as the Strongarm or Hammershot), and some Rebelle blasters, and will have a few 'Foam Data Services' style dart bags for these. Loaners will be given 20 darts in the bags.

For those of us bringing our own blasters, we'll be limiting you to 100 rounds... roughly enough darts for five 18 mags, and a sidearm. We're doing this because we're finding that our Magically Refilling Dart Bag (tm) keeps running low, mainly because a few of us are carrying upwards of 200 rounds, most of which don't get fired!

Also, dependent on the player makeup on the day, our times will change. We're opening slightly earlier, at 12:30 for registration, and diving into games quicker, with them starting around 13:00. However, if we have a lot of adults, we'll be finishing these at around 15:00. These games will be our simpler and popular types such as Lockdown and Infection, though expect some tweaks on these!

From 15:00 onwards, depending on adult numbers, we will be running a series of age 13+ only games to cater for the older players who wish to play more advanced rule sets and longer game scenarios. The usual rules will still apply regarding under 18ís needing to have a responsible adult on site at all times to cover us for child protection. These game will finish around 17:00.

Date and Time
Saturday 13th August 12:30 - 17:00†

Location
The war will be located at the Church of the Latter-Day Saints chapel, at Priesthorpe Rd, Farsley, Pudsey, West Yorkshire, LS28 5RD.

Cost
Grim Up Nerf is free to attend, but all attendees are invited to contribute the princely sum of £1 towards darts, materials etc so that we can keep doing it! Please feel free to bring something to contribute to a communal snack bar, boxes of mini donuts or flapjack seem to go down a treat!†

Loaner Blasters
There will be a selection of front-loading springer blasters at the event. After signing in, you will be directed into the main hall where you will be helped to choose a suitable blaster.

Games
Expect a variety of new games, and some old favourites like Predator and HvZ. Game rules will be explained before each round.†

Safety and Behaviour
1 - We expect blasters to be in original or brightly coloured schemes, with an orange tip. I.e. nothing (weapon or clothing) to alarm the locals or other building users. We wonít be slowing down to assess performance so if youíre primary is modded and there is any chance it might be judged as over powered make sure you have a backup on hand.
2 - We will be providing ALL Koosh/Elite darts to be used at the event. If your blaster requires a different dart type, such as discs, mega darts, or missiles, you are expected to provide these yourself. No FVJ's are allowed.
3 - Eye protection is required and some will be provided, glasses users do so at their own risk.
4 - Anyone under 18 requires parental permission, and under 16's require a chaperone. Consider it an excuse to get your dad or mum playing.
5 - Between games you are expected to help recover and reload darts. Weapons must be holstered, slung, or placed on tables in an unloaded state between games.
6 - If it's not your's, don't touch it without asking
7 - Any abusive, threatening or rascist behaviour won't be tolerated.
8 - By attending, we consider this acceptance of the above rules, and your acknowledgement that Nerfing is not without risk, and that you are playing under your own will, and will not hold anyone else liable for any injuries that occur.
9 - And above all else, it's only a game, have fun, and donít be a silly billy!‎
Dustybin

Sadly, I will not be able to attend because I am on holiday for the majority of August. This will be the third GuN game that I miss in a row.
blindgeekuk

We're expecting Britnerf numbers to be down this month, but church member numbers to be up hopefully.  Justajolt, tbr, dazzle, and you are definite no shows, not sure yet about seiryu or tanithlord...
Justajolt

If you've been to GuN in the past, be sure to go on Netmums and give us a review! We're trying to get it above the other Nerf thing in Leeds on the search list!

http://www.netmums.com/leeds/loca...-up-Nerf-leeds-bradford-Nerf-wars
Seiryuu

If anyone's willing to help me get there then, work schedule permitting, I can attend. Previously, however, I have been getting a lift half way with Justajolt. I can get to Pudsey no problem but have not made it to an event at this venue before.
NorthernWarrior

where do you live in leeds? might be on our route there
Andrew_Aitchison

This looks great. I'm so excited! I live below London but i'm going to try to come. Very Happy

It's not far from Pudsey station to the venue. Let us know your train times and I'll pop up and collect you.

That's a hell of a journey for the Nerf war, you might even pip BigAl for most distance travelled.
Seiryuu

How about the bus station? Trains cost money.

NorthernWarrior wrote:

Hydepark area, can give you more details by PM if that's a convienient location.
old_man_nerf

Google says get the number 16 bus from Pudsey bus station. Get off just after the cenotaph and it's about a 7 minute walk.

Or I could just pick you up.
NorthernWarrior

not confirming it but if we take a 10-15 minute detour we may be able to take you, will have to check with my mum

Dazzle740

I'm still gutted I'm missing another GuN event but unfortunately we go on the big annual family holiday that day down to Devon, i did suggest postponing setting off until the Sunday but for some strange reason that didn't seem to go down well lol, not sure what the issue was really !!!!!!
Will be there in September.
Twibz

Damn, I'll try to get down there.

And maybe bring a 4 man Blackpool strike team with me.

All the guys are from my wargaming club, Boys On Legitimate Logistical Operations Concerning Kommand Systems*, and are stalwart chaps, what what.

*Yes it does spell that. Yes it took us a while to make the name up, and we are somewhat proud of it.

Give's us time to finish the blasters!!
Dazzle740

Well I'm still waiting in body components so I think I'm going to be cutting it really close for September meet, but we'll see lol
bigal123

Won't be coming all the way down for this one but all the family (and me obviously) loved it so much they want to come back for more so we might try for September's event. As soon as you get a date for that please let us know so I can start looking into it. And yes I think travelling up from south of London will trump my attending Very Happy
old_man_nerf

Assume it's the second Saturday of the month and we'll let you know if it's otherwise. Now we have a couple of venues to use it makes it easier for us to maintain consistency on the date (which makes planning in GuN around our family lives easier as well!).
Justajolt

Big Al, I'm travelling south this month!!!

Gutted to be missing GuN8, but it looks like we've got ourselves a Solent War! Gonna represent the GuN Crew daan saaf and across the water ^_^
bigal123

That's a fair distance to travel, you could be taking the 'furthest travelled' crown. So second Saturday in September would be the 10th, would that be the provisional date for GUN 9?
blindgeekuk

Yup, 10th sep.  Will hopefully be the farsley venue
bigal123

Excellent, I will try and put a plan together to hopefully get down to it.
The Dark Kitten

Ahhh with Jolt missing it you wont get to see the relic from GuN 1 I uncovered!
Shame that pulled that out of my leeds drains I did!  Very Happy
But seriously im happy a GuNer finally has it.
NorthernWarrior

WAIT, In september it falls on the 10th? Thats my birthday  Very Happy  Shocked
Twibz

Getting a bit excited for my first proper war!

I wear glasses, do I need protection* too?

Is there a limit on the number of foam flinging weapons I can be equipped with?

Cause I was thinking about a Rapidstrike and twin Doublestrikes; if there is a two limit, I'll swap the strikes out for a good old recon, or even the Ionfire for the lulz

Hopefully have my rapidstrike (Vera) working again. It doesn't rev or push the dart when I pull the triggers. Admittedly haven't had it open yet to look, but a bit of googlefu shows a bit of a theme of dry soldering, that was my initial thought. If I remember to take picture, I'll write up my findings for prosperity

*Eye protection...
bigal123

If you can run and gun with it take it. My usual is to just take everything I fancy trying out and then just swap loadouts between games, often a completely different set of blasters every game Very Happy

Twibz wrote:

Thats what we like to hear!

Twibz wrote:

Our attitude here is that as long as we have made you aware of the risks of darts without certified eye protection, and that it is your decision to wear standard glasses instead, then we cannot be held responsible.

The limit is how many you can carry and use - I normally carry Bertha, a hammershot, a sledgefire, a tripled Triad and a Jolt.
NorthernWarrior

would a 3s 130 rhino be aloud in the normal rounds?
Dustybin

Yes, it would. It would be very difficult to get a rhino'd stryfe to get more than 130 fps.
blindgeekuk

Yeah, a 3s rhino'ed stryfe is usually under the limit. General rule: if you wouldn't want to get hit by it, don't bring it
Andrew_Aitchison

Is the Boomco Halo M6 pistol allowed, it doesn't have an orange tip, but is obviously a toy, I haven't modified the colour at all.
Boff

Andrew_Aitchison wrote:

For future reference, orange tip rules are US rules, not UK ones. I've put the relevant UK laws here.
NorthernWarrior

are you bringing your own darts because the cross bolts magnus is mega and that is boom co? magnus might be converted. i don't know Very Happy
blindgeekuk

Don't bring a boomco blaster
We have some mega darts
Justajolt

It's with the Scottish £10 and the avacados!
Andrew_Aitchison

blindgeekuk wrote:

I fully intend to bring all my own darts that are not elite. and am accepting that ill lose many. Is there any other reason I cant bring my 1 boomco pistol? ???!!?
blindgeekuk

Regarding BoomCo, I should really add it to the general rules part of the announcement post, as it's one of the conditions in the players conduct agreement sheet we ask you to sign.

In terms of our reasoning why we only support Nerf brand or Nerf brand compatible blasters (in the case of seriyuu's fun find):

1) we are Grim Up Nerf. We're not Grim Up Foam Dart Blasters (which would still not cover BoomCo). We're not Grim Up 'Toys that fire "safe" projectiles under the 1 joule limit, whether it be foam or gummy tipped plastic straw' (maybe we should be, because that name really rolls off the tongue)

2) we have encountered 1 BoomCo pistol user in 8 months of events, and have not had the opportunity to test fire them thru a chrono, test fire them against our own bare skin, kids bare skin, safety glasses etc, nor do we know how the gummy tips would interact with the churches paintwork, pictures, posters, furniture etc

3) because I said so. A fairly simple reason, but as founder and organiser, if I say something is banned, then I jolly well expect people to respect that decision without me having to explain myself.
old_man_nerf

We have a pool of a few thousand bright yellow koosh darts. Everyone knows what they are looking for during dart sweeps because they have already loaded the darts into their blasters.

So your rate of return during dart sweeps would be low, and even if people did manage to return a few they might then assume they were part of the generic dart pool and try to use them themselves. And even if they did stick them back in the 'big bag o'darts' you'd then have to waste your time going through the bag to find them. Like trying to find a straw in a haystack 😀

Seriously, better to stick to Nerf darts and associated blasters - it's just easier in this group situation.
NorthernWarrior

Can a make a recommendation for a game mode? I don't if jolt told you about it last time but if he didn't but its called Trouble in Terrorist Town. Everyone has 1 life so when you've been tagged you have to sit where you died until checked, 1-3 people(depending on numbers, probably 3 in the case of GuN) are chosen randomly at the start of the game by cards or similar unguessable way. These people are the traitors, the traitors know who each other are but the innocents don't know who the traitors are. The traitors have to kill everybody without being discovered and killed. There is also a detective who everyone knows in the detective and they are innocent but they can check bodys for Innocent/Traitor cards. This is optional and I don't usually play with the detective in.

The traitors win when every innocent has been tagged.
The innocents win when every traitor has been tagged.

Very Happy
old_man_nerf

Sounds like you know how it plays - well volunteered to lead on this one. We can help by managing everyone into the main hall/getting them to listen to instructions for you

How long do you want to run the game for roughly so it can be planned in?
NorthernWarrior

i don't know how long the game would last. it varies depending on the terrorists because they may sit around for 15 minutes but a timer could be set to limit game time, to play it we at least 10 mins but it never lasts more than 30 mins and that is a very long game because from personal experience it is a 1 sided game in a sense. You either get it very right as a terrorist or very wrong because i you get noticed your screwed but if you can justify it or not get caught you can eliminate an entire team with ease
NorthernWarrior

example of the game mode here --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OTMD6_dKpg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAYk2BLF-xo
NorthernWarrior

Side note for blindgeekuk: we are bringing 3-4 people(one unconfirmed) and jolt may have told Callum we could be in the 13+ games but the other two people are my sister who was there last month and my neibourgh, Sam who are both under 13+. What should we do about it?
NorthernWarrior

1. We have resolved the problem above and 2. Why is no one posting.  Crying or Very sad    Rolling Eyes
blindgeekuk

1) 13+ games may or may not happen depending on distribution of attendees - if theres not enough grown ups to make it viable, we'll just carry on playing as normla

2) I'm the middle of a house move, Justajolt is on holiday, and I'm not sure if Old_Man_Nerf is back from his holiday.
Tanithlord

I will be there this weekend can I bring a 6Yo, 9Yo, 28Yo with me Smile

I don't want to come across as too eager... currently bouncing off the walls with excitement though. Or maybe that's sugar, I have just had a bottle of dew...

The Blackpool strike team looks like it's 3 men strong. All in their late 20s and should probably know better.
Seiryuu

As said before, I can make it to pudsey and I can almost certainly make it to the cenotaph OMN mentioned but I'm terrible at map reading (to the point of medical diagnosis) and do not even know what this particular venue looks like.

Given that the event is only a day and a half away now, I would very much appreciate some more definite idea of who can and can't help me in my last leg of the journey.
There will be cupcakes in it for you.

Oh and here's something for Twibz.
old_man_nerf

Can pick you up between 12 and 1215ish. Just got to work out how we are getting the key for the venue as part of our journey.

Don't pack too much stuff as there will be a car full!

PM me your mobile number (assuming you have one) if you want me to give you a message about where we are tomorrow.
Twibz

Seiryuu wrote:

Verily old bean, I shall endeavour to acquire this for a future war or two.

Also, I'd offer a lift, but my car will be FULL lol.
blindgeekuk

Hi all - just a heads up to say we're still on for tomorrow.

I've just taken delivery of 1500 new yellow koosh, to join the 2000 darts in the magical refilling dart bag.

Due to transportation issues, there will only be a small amount of loaners, much less than normal

Doors open at 12:30, games start at 1, and it'll be fast and furious...
old_man_nerf

Thanks, but not this month. By the time I've gone to pick up the venue key, and picked us a birthday present for the missus, i'll be most of the way to the venue and it'll be about 12.

There will be at least 15 loaders, 4000ish darts, and a selection of jolts for pistols only rounds. I do have someega darts with me for those using that range

edit:
If you've got a single shot pistol, can you make sure you bring one, I'm intending on running at least one hvz/infection round as pistols/3 second stun, and a golden gun round. There will be some loaner pistols in case
NewportNerfer113

Have a good day today guys, hope that the weather holds out.
blindgeekuk

Quick summary: my feet ache

Real summary: 31 attendees, regulars, church members, people who'd heard about us on Britnerf, people who'd heard about us via the website, people who had heard about us via the local community.

Good mix of games types, all of which worked well and some that we need to add our distinctive GuN styling to.

Big shout out to Northernwarrior and Rooster for stepping up and running trouble in terrorist town. Well done lads, we enjoyed it and will adapt it

Huge shout out to twibz and his mates, he was struggling with his knee/ankle but played on and played hard. With tbr and dazzle, thats 5 blackpool nerfers, so I see a community forming, which we'll donate darts towards.

A big thanks to Oldmannerf for giving us and seiryuu a lift
old_man_nerf

Was a great afternoon run admirably by Adam with assistance for trouble in terrorist town (I still have some issues with the name - can we GuN it up and call it 't'rubble a't mill' or some thing?).

We discussed some amendments to the game on the journey home to help expand its appeal and we'll definitely play if again  - thanks to the lads who introduced it to us.

And does GuN get a prize for 'player who has traveled the furthest distance' - in this case from Surrey to Yorkshire! Great effort and hope it was worth it.
Twibz

A good time was had by all! Really enjoyed the day, finally actually coming down to an event and putting some faces to names. Massive thanks for everyone involved in making today happen.

Woo go me! Yeah, silly beggar fell off a climbing wall on the 20th of July and snapped all* the tendons in my ankle and broke a few bones in my foot to boot; but painkillers, caffeine and giddy excitement can keep a man going for hours.
My mates enjoyed it and are definitely interested in coming back too fling more foam. Might need to convince them a little more before they join the forum though.

Defo have to look into Blackpool meeting, now we have a bit of a contingent.

*No really: ALL of them, the doctors were somewhat impressed.  Very Happy
blindgeekuk

In which case Twibz, you have my admiration. As a former climber (before my eyesight went bad), and as a parent to a young climber who wants to compete professionally (the announcement of sports climbing in the 2020 Olympics brought a new meaning to giddy excitement) I know just how bad climbing injuries can be.
Seiryuu

Climbing olympics? Now that's the sort of "sport" I can get behind!
Tanithlord

Can I just say a huge thanks for Running the event, The kids loved it and had a fab time, even though we had to sneak off early due to tiredness and hungry tummy's. (Pritty much drove to asda 2 mins down the road and Noah was asleep)

On a personal note loved the time there another fantastic event with fantastic people

Thanks

James
Twibz

Who was the chap in the red shirt who was part of the original Special Farces?
I didn't catch your name buddy, but you were awesome.

Also Mark, the guys and I would like the team name of Special Farces for our antics from now on, so thanks for the idea!

Inspired to get a-modding now!
old_man_nerf

Chap in the red T-shirt was Andrew, all the way from Surrey.

And you're welcome to the 'special farces' moniker (although we'll expect t shirts with it on from now on!). If anyone else needs a satirical name feel free to ask and we'll see what we can come up with Smile
blindgeekuk

Smile

Seiryuu - sports climbing at the olympics could be fun, but i'm never convinced by the current rules that have been tried. For an alternative and enjoyable watch, check out 'psicobloc'

Twibz, what OldManNerf said... you're welcome to use the Special Farces moniker, but we expect some sign of it next time you're over. Red shirt guy was Andrew, 3d printer, and student. Check out his slamfire retaliator kit!
Twibz

Awesome, thanks guys.
I had a few ideas of things to acquire or otherwise "do", including using one of these as a rocket launcher....via a pvc drainpipe (suitably painted) using demolisher rockets. Performance would be atrocious, but damn it would look cool

We were toying with the idea of a Rifleman, Sapper (with the above bazooka), Sniper and Gunner for a fireteam... though the sniper will be some work, and we need someone to fill that role.

We view fun as serious business...

I noticed one or two people with cameras on the day, could anyone post me in the right direction for some videos? I subbed to GuN on youtube, so will see if anything is uploaded there.
NorthernWarrior

I got meat grinder but then my phone with shifting around to much so that's all I got  before I gave up so if you want meat grinder ask.

Ah, that would be the battle I missed out on while fiddling with my blasters. Damn.

Thanks for the offer though, NW.
blindgeekuk

only 2 out of my 3 action cams recorded anything, and its so out of focus (need to adjust the settings) its unusable

Rifleman - stryfe or rapidstrike? + lots of clips
Sapper - Or just get a thunderblast... Maybe carries sock grenades and a mega shotgun (megas could be instant respawn)
Sniper - retaliator or EAT built for distance/accuracy (i.e. mine or OldManNerf's gear) and ghillie suit for shits and giggles
Gunner - arthur had this role sorted with the havok fire and 75 round belts... If we bung in IMRs into that then he'll definitely get some improved performance
Justajolt

How about a Scout class, lightly armed, fast moving etc
Dustybin

Me and Seiryuu both have Titans that could be used as rocket launchers...
Twibz

Justajolt wrote:

"Fast moving". Hahaha...Though I like the idea. He shall be armed with a deploy and a red shirt.

Dustybin wrote:

Tempted, though I think I'm going to get inventing. What ranges are you getting out of them?

I've started a new thread for the Special Farces squads/rules in the general Nerf forums.
