Grim Up Nerf 4, Sat 16th April, 1-4pm, tong (Leeds/Bradford)

Grim Up Nerf 4 - "Where's the rescue squad?"

It might be another Grim Up Nerf, but that doesn't stop us improving... Expect movie themed games, rapid fire raining of darts, and other new super secret stuff (TM).

Date and Time
Saturday 16th April 13:00 - 16:00

Location
The war will be located at the Church of the Latter-Day Saints chapel, at 21 Toftshaw Ln, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD4 6RB
If you’re travelling by public transport, we can pick you up from Bradford Interchange. Justajolt will be running a shuttle service between there and the venue at 12:30. Send him a PM for more info and to arrange pickup and deployment into the combat zone. Otherwise, the venue is on the 425 and 427 Arriva West Yorkshire bus route.

Cost
All attendees are invited to contribute the princely sum of £1 towards darts, materials etc so that we can keep doing it!
Please feel free to bring something to contribute to a communal snack bar, boxes of mini donuts or flapjack seem to go down a treat!

Loaner Blasters
There will be a selection of springer front loading revolver blasters at the event. After signing in, you will be directed into the main hall where you will be helped to choose a suitable blaster. A small supply of flywheel blasters will be loaned to people who donate money and snacks on a first come first served basis.

Games
Expect a variety of games, from our favourites like Team Deathmatch and HvZ, to movie based games, like Predator and Black 'Kes' Down. Game rules will be explained before each round.

Safety and Behaviour
1 - We expect blasters to be in original or brightly coloured schemes, with an orange tip. I.e. nothing (weapon or clothing) to alarm the locals or other building users. We won’t be slowing down to assess performance so if you’re primary is modded and there is any chance it might be judged as over powered make sure you have a backup on hand.
2 - We will be providing ALL Koosh/Elite darts to be used at the event. If your blaster requires a different dart type, such as discs, mega darts, or missiles, you are expected to provide these yourself. No FVJ's are allowed.
3 - Eye protection is required and some will be provided, glasses users do so at their own risk.
4 - Anyone under 18 requires parental permission, and under 16's require a chaperone. Consider it an excuse to get your dad or mum playing.
5 - Between games you are expected to help recover and reload darts. Weapons must be holstered, slung, or placed on tables in an unloaded state between games.
6 - If it's not your's, don't touch it without asking
7 - Any abusive, threatening or rascist behaviour won't be tolerated.
8 - By attending, we consider this acceptance of the above rules, and your acknowledgement that Nerfing is not without risk, and that you are playing under your own will, and will not hold anyone else liable for any injuries that occur.
9 - And above all else, it's only a game, have fun, and don’t be a silly billy![/u]
old_man_nerf

That's settled then. I'm excited already!
Justajolt

I secretly plan on kidnapping Davidov attendees and bringing them back for this one as Grim-Conscripts...
Justajolt

Whoops. Did I type that out loud?
Dustybin

Count me in! I should be more prepared than last time because I will have finished my primary and I might an overmodded barricade for fun.
bigal123

Gutted, i'm down Yorkshire way the weekend before so will miss this but might be able to make one in the summer if you keep it up. Fingers crossed.
old_man_nerf

Blame justajolt and his wandering ways Smile

We'll be doing this for a while yet - it's still too much fun - so other opportunities will arise to visit....
Justajolt

Yeah, my bad. That was me! There will be many more though. The Grimness of the Nerf isn't going away any time soon!

I actually still have a flip fury from the last war unclaimed...
old_man_nerf

We're going to need a lost property box soon Smile I have some bits from the event before last that no one has claimed yet...
blindgeekuk

I came home with one of Seiryuu's vortex discs and a shredded mega dart.
I'm missing a stampede bipod handle, sledgefire shell (with name on...) and painted raider stock, though I might have given that to someone.

Another hundred vortex discs arrived yesterday to go in the groups supply, and there's some (30?) mega darts due as well, so we'll have a SMALL supply of these ammo types. Must say, with the way vortex discs fly and bounce, they are easily lost, so I might remove the revonix from my arsenal, despite how fun it is.

Red and blue team bibs have been ordered, was trying to find somewhere that could print the logo on, but that was going to be prohibitively expensive (1 bib rather than 12 for th available donations).

I'll be ordering a hundred or so darts to replace damaged and lost ones given we had a high dart casualty rate in event 3 due to more high powered blasters in use, and more outdoor play

*cough* Email me, I might be able to sort you out. I've already tooled your logo... Embroidery is more durable than printing, too. Very Happy
Justajolt

I've got 50 discs for a vortex too. Looks like we'll be having some new twists on gameplay this time!
Dustybin

I will be bringing a friend this time, just to warn you he is allergic to nuts so NO NUTS ON THE SNACK TABLE.
old_man_nerf

Would you like to rephrase that in a slightly less demanding tone.....

If you don't like my choice of snacks don't eat my choice of snacks!!
Boff

Dustybin, OMN's right here. This one's on your friend. Nut allergies tend to result in anaphylaxis and a Type 1 hypersensitivity reaction will ruin not just the patient's day but everyone else's, too. I would recommend (like I used to when I was doing my Red Cross Event First Aid) that anyone with an allergy like that bring their own food and an epi-pen so they don't run the risk of having an issue. Smile
blindgeekuk

I'm in two minds here...

As a parent of kids with Eosinophilic gastroenteritis, I wouldn't expect people to specifically avoid the trigger foods, and i'm very used to taking food to parties for them.

The flipside is that there is a kid in my sons year at school, who is highly allergic to the oil from oranges, so much so that if someone handled an orange, then touched a door handle, and the kid touched it a few hours later, he needed an epi-pen... The school enacted a No Oranges rule, that some of the white middle class families took offence to, until they got threatened with court action if their kids packlunch killed someone...

The best thing Dustybin, is to advise your friend to bring his own suitable snack, but I will ensure that Nut Free snacks are available, and kept seperate, so he gets first dibs.
old_man_nerf

It's not the nut allergy I'm objecting too!!!

I don't envy the kid at all having to deal with that. But I do mind demands being made on volunteers.....
Justajolt

I'd also like to add, no FNJ darts (Full Nut Jacket). Leave them at home! That means you Seiryyu! With all your exotic blasters, it wouldn't surprise me!
The Dark Kitten

Just fully fixed/finished(?) my 3s rhino stryfe.
Even though i won't be coming until may it screams!
I mildly tested against my friends who were using stock rapidstrikes.

It ended with them hiding in cover whilst i rushed from cover to cover
I'll see you then and please don't get scared.

Enjoy next war and please Film!!
Justajolt

That sounds insane! Pint sized power!

Is there anything one can't Rhino?? *Looks at Jolt thoughtfully..*
Seiryuu

I'll provide the tactical Jolt if you provide the afterburner barrel extension.
Dustybin

Jolt with afterburners, I must see that
Justajolt

What have we started...??

Are you going to Davidov's Saturday Skirmish, DustyBin? Might see you there if you are. Is you r friend going to that too? If he comes to Grim, we'll just make sure that we leave the labels on anything we buy so he can check it first.
Dustybin

He isn't going to Davidovs Saturday skirmish; we are combing going there with a trip to my uncles.
Justajolt

Ok. Just to clarify the nuts thing:

We're not professionals. We're volunteers who like to Nerf. As such, we want to make it clear that anyone with something like allergies or a known medical condition needs to take proper precautions for it. Basically, we're concerned that if we try to make special arrangements for something and get it wrong, some monkey will try to sue us or something. So, we'd rather stay out of things to do with the allergy and put the onus on him to know his condition and act responsibly whilst there . Basically, if he has doubts about whatever is there, don't eat it. Bring a backup just in case.

We just want to have fun Nerfing without putting ourselves in a position which will give us headaches later. Especially since we're giving up our free time to do it!

I mean this in the nicest way possible. We've just got to protect ourselves in this world where everyone blames someone else for what happens to them.

With all of that out of the way, I've been rewiring a Rayven and chopping bits off this evening...

I think that's part of the concern which OMN was expressing earlier. Just felt the need to clarify!
old_man_nerf

With regard to BGUK and his post we just wanted to confirm that while he has had to take a break from planning and involvement in Grim up Nerf due to personal circumstances, justajolt and myself remain committed to providing more foamy fun.

We'll miss you and your Bertha BGUK - hope you can come back and join us soon....

PS - I'm sure his contributions on here will continue Smile
blindgeekuk

Yeah, I should have clarified it.

There has been no falling out, no issues in organising, nothing negative to do wthi the events in anyway, it is merely a change in situations at home forcing a short break from nerfing.

I'm still involved in the community, i'm still modding things (slingfire spring and some devcon ordered today), still trying to refine my gear (bsuk mag pouches ordered today)

I'm gutted that i'm missing this month's event, Black 'kes' Down is shaping up to be awesome!
Dustybin

Just to warn you guys, I have found a hulk titan and will probably be using it. I also found a really easy way to make a Nerf grenade that would work really well in the HvZ matches.
blindgeekuk

An elastic band around the tip of 6/7 darts? Absolutely kills elite darts doing that
Dustybin

Well less of a grenade, more of a shotgun. I grab 7-9 darts and throw them, they go everywhere and is great for loads of people.
blindgeekuk

Ah. I actually played with that idea in the impromptu street battle. Generally, the darts don't hit with enough oomph to register as a hit.
Your better off with a good front loader in the speed zombie rounds: flipfury, strongarm, hammershot etc
old_man_nerf

Dustybin wrote:

We'll take a look on the day. 'Our event - our rules' applies in terms of assessing suitability. We have plenty of other choices if it proves unusable.
blindgeekuk

One of these?:
http://Nerf.wikia.com/wiki/Hulk_Abomination_Blaster

Did it come with the hornet blaster as well? Means the guys won't have to rely on Seiryuu bringing his titan
Dustybin

Yes it is that, Sadly, no hornet. That would cost too much, I am getting it off UKNerfWar.
Rab

blindgeekuk wrote:

That's why I think the lawbringer is such a good weapon choice although I can't wait to see those new alien menace blasters. The rebelle line has some great front loaders, the spylight strongarm thing is quicker to reload than a standard strongarm as there's no pop out cylinder,  never tried the fearless fire but it looks useful and then the best front loader out there, the guardian crossbow.
Seiryuu

Hulk Titan is just a green Titan. Assuming it's firing its stock darts, I really doubt there's any way it could pose a problem.
old_man_nerf

More a case of if it's any use in the games. We used your Titan last time but it would be wrong to assume we are playing that game again at the next event.

Then it just becomes a case of 'fire large dart, get owned by everyone else trying to retrieve it, followed by another walk back to the respawn....' but if you are into that it's up to you Smile
The Dark Kitten

I'd have to check the calendar (of which I am not in the position to doe as im in bed) but from memory it seems viable as I wont have anything to get in teh way

Well that is if my parents feel up to it.

Anyone have a chrono?
Id like to see the results of my Rhinoed Stryfe.

Anyway ill check when I get up ill update everyone on the situation.
Dustybin

Are socks allowed, if so then we could use shields in all rounds and then you lose your shield until you respawn when your shield is hit by a rocket/sock.
old_man_nerf

If you want to run a round where socks are used then send me a pm and we'll let you know what is required in terms of organising things.
Justajolt

That's a cool idea, actually! If you're up for organising a game type for this Grim Up, that would be phenomenal! Have a good think and pm, like OMN said. We can help make it happen if you've got a good idea to try. Only two and a half weeks to go! Looking forward to it ^_^
Tanithlord

Going to try and get there and try out some new shiny things
Seiryuu

Sorry guys, work needs me this time. Got to give it a miss this month.
Justajolt

Tanith: looking forward to being dazzled! I like shiny ^_^
Seiryuu: gutted! You could always weaponise a crazy chilli into your employers eyes, come to play, then go back and say it wasn't you. It definitely might work.
Dustybin

I am not sure but I don't think that I will be able to come, my dad has an diving course on the same day with my brother and my mum says that she won't be able to drive me to Bradford by herself.
blindgeekuk

Pity, we were hoping we could use your Titan Sad

And yes folks, family crisis is under control and i'm back, this time with 4 out of 5 kids in tow (and if I could figure out a teething activated trigger, the baby would be there as well!)

This does mean the loaner bin takes an immediate hit due to daughters wanting their rebelle blasters that are normally lent out.
Seiryuu

Do you not have that guy with the Hulk Abomination Titan coming?
blindgeekuk

That was Dustybin! Neither of you with titans are coming...
Seiryuu

Drat, sorry about that then. Best of luck with your other games.
Bet you'll have both of us next month, in true public transport fashion.
Justajolt

I have a big bad bow, but not quite the same...
blindgeekuk

And we've got the Demolisher and it's missile launcher. Might have to tweak the goal slightly
Tanithlord

Due to mad hours on placement this week and no time to go to the armoury that i call home, I will be just bringing a lot of stock stuff this time and a small riot shield that I need to test, so please shoot it as i need to see how it holds up Smile
old_man_nerf

Just make sure whatever you bring is well marked or labeled. We have a lot of kit and want to make sure it all goes home with the right owners!

Are all the edges on the riot shield suitably covered? Have you seen the ones bguk made? They work well and haven't caused us/the users any problems so far.
Tanithlord

Its eva foam duck type and pvc but ill let you make it and yes all my things will have ribbon and cogs on Smile
Dustybin

Really annoyed that I can't come, the diving course had to be on that weekend, so my friend can't come aswell. You will have to deal with the lack of Titans.
old_man_nerf

Just reminding everyone that it's 'game on' again tomorrow, come rain, shine or snow, we'll be in Tong and ready to go from 1pm.

Hopefully see some of you there!
blindgeekuk

Blasters are ready to be loaded into the car, not quite sure how i'll fit them in though Smile

I'm going to make a big effort to film the Black Kes Down game from as many angles as possible
old_man_nerf

Yes. At the very least I'm going to aim to get some photos this event. With out this proof people may suspect we are making all this grim up Nerf stuff up Smile
blindgeekuk

Justajolt

"come rain, shine or snow"

Edit: Rain, hail or snow. It's that grim.
blindgeekuk

The goo news is i've got all but the riot shields in, the bad news, i'm not conviced the kids will fit Very Happy

I'm alcohol trying a different gear setup this month, hammershot holster on my left rather than right, resulting in a crossdraw. And bsuk shotgun holster on my right, so I can choose between roguhcut/sledgefire/eat. Tried it on the bandolier but found it kept dropping to an uncomfortable angle, plus the usual drawing issues

Edit: I suspect at the end, i'm going to want a BSUK mk iv holster so it can hold either the hammershot or eat
Tanithlord

Meh im just running a um modded demolisher and then a sledge fire and a rebelle 5 shot, we will see how this minimal loadout works but next time mods, mods everywhere Smile
blindgeekuk

Most of us were running unmodded stuff when we started in January, now almost all our core blasters have mods everywhere
old_man_nerf

I've just armed both daughters with some rebelle power pairs. They pack a punch for such small blasters - be prepared!

PS - bguk - 'I'm alcohol trying' as well when we get back tonight Smile
blindgeekuk

Damn autocorrect!

Halfway to tong, and the snow has started! It really is grim up North!

Edit:

Another successful event. We started with 8 including TanithLord, and had 15 by the end. We're putting the lower attendance down to the week move... blame Justajolt for wanting to go to london!

We played a lot of freeze tag, which worked really well with the smaller team sizes, and a lot of HvZ, using a rules tweak from Davidov's games, 5 second stun, 5 seconds of immunity, which really changed the dynamic of the game

No Black 'kes' Down, we decided to leave that until we have more people.

The snow kept trying, but not very hard, though it was cold up in the heights of Tong, even with the sun out.
old_man_nerf

That was so much fun. And strangely relaxing!

Definitely beer time now Smile

PS - it was t shirt weather if you were outrunning zombies fast enough!
Justajolt

So less than expected but probably my fault for being selfish and changing the date! We all still had a tonne of fun, though.

It was great to have you with us, TanithLord! I'm looking forward to hearing more about your Derby and Coventry events.

My kit review:

I tried out top loading Rayven with Rapidpistol as secondary and hammershot as last resort.

Rapidpistol as a secondary was spot on! Not small but great for use in my left hand, the dart spamming ability more than compensating for the need to aim.

The Rayven was fantastic and did exactly what I've come to expect of it. Jam-free solid blasting! It was really useful being able to keep on topping up as I was going too. Duel wielding the two flywheels was also a tonne of fun! Hammershot not needed in the slightest!

The modded barricades performed phenomenally! As a secondary, I now prefer these to my  Hammershot. The one with the worker flywheels was especially potent with 3IMRs an held its own when my ailing 5kg EAT suffered catastrophic failure. I'd recommend a Supercade to anyone as a secondary!

For the first time, I wore something approaching a 'rig'. It consisted of my hammershot holster with a dart pouch, dump pouch (cereal box plus duct tape you get the idea!) and duct tape mag holders.

Holster: needs work. Had two hammershot fall outs.
Dart pouch and Mag holders: spot on.

The big surprise for me was that the cereal box was also a perfect size for a barricade! Whilst this means I may have to cut up another cereal box for a dump pouch, this was possibly one of the most useful bits on my belt today!

Tanithlord

Thanks to you all for a wonderful day and fab to meet you all, I'm back safe in derby after picking up a pizza.

You have all make me want to brake my modding gear out so that my demolisher hits as hard as yours so lots of research in to a lipo is been done as we speak, "I do believe that youtube knows all"

Kit wise my last min ducktape made mag holders held up well and surprised me.
old_man_nerf

Just to add Tanithlord is an excellent chap and all round good guy and we should support any effort to get games played in and around Derby if we can.

Freeze tag worked so well with the numbers we had and fitted well with the wintry weather. Longer games of HvZ were also good. Even being the OZ and knowing you'll have a harder time getting the first tag was enjoyable for the challenge.
Justajolt

Quote:
Kit wise my last min ducktape made mag holders held up well and surprised me.

You're in good company there! And yeah... between youtube and the excellend advice here, you're sorted. Just do what you want to do and make your blasters your own (with or without duct tape!)

I second what OMN said about both the Lord of Tanith and Derby. It's pretty central, actually, in terms of the whole country...
blindgeekuk

So, with snow threatening to prove that it really is Grim Up North, we ran our 4th monthly event.

This month was always going to be a strange one. We'd moved the date back a week so that Justajolt could attend the London event and steal some ideas. Regular attendee Seiryuu couldn't come. I'd had to initally pull out due to the missus falling out with me Nerfing. Oldman_nerf and I were going to have to bring our kids...

‎This month, rather than getting a lift with all the gear, my wife was taking me, and we'd already split some out. My car is small... I couldn't actually get the box of blasters in, so just randomly slung them in amongst the kids. It meant unpacking them could be a ballache, but hey, no space...

We arrived earlier than normal. Usually we get there just before 1, this month, I was there before 12:30. The extra setup time meant we could do it at a slower pace, and think about stuff and put blasters out properly.

By quarter past one, none of the usuals had arrived, so we decided to throw out the plans we had and take advantage of only having 8 players to try some different rules.

Two quick games of freeze tag, which my team won both of and we decided that since my Demolisher and Justajolts rayven were so dominating of the game that it should be us two versus the rest. I was happy with idea, Justajolt plays very similarly to me. We fired a couple of warning shots down the corridor then headed out round the edge of the building. We had a momentary hairy moment at one corner, but two rapid fire blasters soon a had that under control. We split and went through the two different fire exits and cleared the main hall, then with only old_man_nerf's son left and making a run for it, I pulled the trigger and got him in the groin at 130fps...

We switched over to HvZ, and went with Davidov's 5 second stun/5 second immunity rule, rather than our usual 5 or 10 second stun rules. Despite me deciding we were using this rule, I forgot it and it was nearly my undoing the first time that old_man_nerf got hit in front of me.

A car load of Justajolt's friends arrived at this point, bumping the numbers upto 15, and they jumped straight into the HvZ round. I'm not sure who fell victim second, but the third and fourth got caught in front of me. It's one thing I love about this game type, how the tide suddenly turns. The humans soon found themselves in the carpark fending off attempts from 3 zombies, and I got split off and cornered. A shout across the car park and the humans came to my rescue!

Slowly our numbers whittled down, and then there was two of us on the driveway, hordes of zombies surrounding. My daughter surged forward, lawbringer shot stopping her. I turned to check how clear I was to retreat, only to see the other human become a zombie. To quote Hudson from aliens 'it's game over man, game over!'.

I was the last human alive, the first time in 20+ rounds of HvZ. So I choose the bet exit, a single shot to the temple, no zombie scum was chowing down on me!

We tried Predator again, and without access to Seriyuu's titan, hid 5 demolisher missiles and declared that 3 successful missile hits on the predator killed it. Only me and TanithLord were rocking demolishers, so the tactic was find the missiles, get them to us, and takeout the predator. Good theory, poor implementation... Oldman_nerf's son had been chosen as the baddie, and he made me his primary target, and i'm a terrible shot with the hamp. We'd given the humans 4 lives, and i'd lost 3 of mine before we hit him once!

So I switched tactics, hand over the Demolisher to others, and charge!

More freeze tag, this time with bigger teams, and shields, which really altered it. That was a really close fought round, with both teams been within one tag of winning several times.

Then some more HvZ. For me, the last round was cool, 4 kid zombies to start, and I got tagged early on. I'm not the fastest runner, especially on squelchy grassy slopes, and there were several using jolts to good effect. But I got two awesome tags. The first, I heard TanithLord heading inside at the other end of the corridor, so waited, flat against the wall by the door, and tagged him as he shot past. The second, the winning tag against Oldman_nerf's son was as his dad tried to chase him down, right into me...

It was another great event, really pleased to have met TanithLord who drove up from Derby. We like the sound of what he wants to do down there and will help where we can. The weather, while cold, windy, and occasionally snowy, was fine once you got running.

Dart wise, we had a lot of deheaded darts this month. Mainly blue koosh and a few yellows. Blues, I have a mix of gen 2 and 3. Definitely time to add a bulk amount to the pool to offset the ones that are looking a bit tired. I even managed to find the remains of one from event 2.

Gear wise, Big Bertha, my modded demolisher performed really well. The 7 shot hammershot was used during HvZ, but not heavily. I tried a couple of different combos, with the eat and sledgefire in a bsuk drop leg holster a couple of times, lawbringer on a sling, eat in my hand, roughcut on my back etc. The EAT let me down big time during a freeze tag round, due to a mangled two dart jam, both blue koosh. As much as I love it's accuracy and power, I am thinking of just replacing it full time with the lawbringer. It's front loading and one handed use is brill, and with a spring upgrade, it won't get super performance unlike the eat, but will be good enough to use.

Next month is provisionally Sat 14th, same times, same place, but we'll confirm soon.‎
Rab

Sounds ace.

The lawbringer while under powered in stock form comes into its own with a simple spring upgrade. Im guessing putting it just above stock blasters.
