Post Grim up Nerf 16 - April edition.  Reply with quote
Well once again Grim up Nerf has been and gone for another month and what a fantastic day it was too!!.
The group as a whole was quite noticeably smaller than we've seen over the last few months but that certainly didn't detract from the level of fun had by all.
The group was a good range this weekend of ages and abilities and personally I enjoyed managing to meet many people on Saturday and finally being able to put a face to Britnerf user names lol. Which also included a large contingent from further up north with the likes of FDT, Bigal and although i didn't actually get his name I'm assuming Rab.
Now to the day itself and the games played, well firstly WHAT A DAY!!!!!
The weather was well and truly on our side and the sun was beaming and gloriously hot, although it made HvZ very exhausting to say the least running around in the heat and sunshine.
The day started with the usual freeze tag which with the teams divided into red bibs and none bibs we came to a very quick realization that the teams needed re-sorting for the next round as the none bibs (me included lol) as we very quickly surged around the red bibs tagging the majority outside and then pushed through the building picking off the remaining few lol with almost military precision!!!.
But as said the second round the teams were a lot better balanced and the game lasted a lot longer with the advantage constantly swinging from one team to the other.
Then it was Getting the VIP to safety lol and what a brilliant game or games they turned out to be.
The red bibs managed to win both games (although technically there was three rounds but confusion of the safe place voided the win lol).
Although on the last game the none bibs changed the VIP selected, and we almost won as I was the VIP and was practically at the flag but a very sneaky FDT was hiding just behind the crest of the embankment and popped up and managed to tag me just as i got to the flag ( although i still say i got home before getting tagged lol, think it should go to the photo finish hahaha) which unfortunately meant i had to go back and re-spawn which is when the reds seized the moment to do a finale push and got their VIP through to their flag!!!! oh bugger lol.
Then it was either HvZ then defend the core or vice versa i can't actually remember, but great fun was had as always with the 2 rounds of HvZ trying to last the very end. And tactics played a huge part with the two rounds of defend the core, with both teams winning when it was their turn to try and infiltrate into the building and try to get to the core. Although the reds were held back for longer when it was their turn to attempt to get through the defence and into the core, so much so i was getting down to my last mag whilst holding one of the main corridors ( I have/carry 9 mags) but the reds kept probing the defenses and eventually found a weak spot and managed to surge through in numbers lol.
Next up was barrel run which was exceptional fun and although neither time won and the time ran down slight tweaking is needed with the game play rules lol.
After a full afternoon of fun and running around we all ( the smaller group which was left ) all congregated out on the grass outside and chatted, admired others blasters and generally filled our faces with cake and flap jack goodness before packing up, tidying the venue then saying our goodbyes and heading off home.
Bring on GuN 17!!!!!.

I know who dazzle is referring to (or at least is thinking is Rab) but unfortunately i cant remember his name either. Big beard - rocking a Mastadon? Sorry fella - make your self known on here and we'll say hello properly again!

Was great to have some improptu picnics this weekend. We needed to refresh and rehydrate. I've even been digging old hydration packs out today and contemplating fixing them to my h harness!

Agreed the spawn points need a bit of refining and definition. I'm going to go through each set of game rules we have and use a map of the site to specify where they are. Then each team can have a picture of the point which avoids any confusion!

Still a great craic though, and often it doesn't matter who wins or loses as long as we are having fun spraying each other with darts Smile

And thanks dazzle for the advice you gave my son on hydro dipping. He's keen to give it a go now.

I'd like to say thanks to all those who attended for helping me lose my Nerf war 'V' plates. I had a huge tonne of fun and my muscles are still screaming at the way I forgot about the 4 years behind a desk and charged around like a loony.

I had tried to get my LED tubes wired onto the sides of the Typhon on the morning of the day, realised the time then tore up the M1... Leaving the charged LiPos, modified FF, screwdriver (I'd left the Modulus's screws out in the rush) behind but arrived in good time to the glorious sunshine and smiling faces rocking my trusty Rampage with a 5kg spring I'd installed the night before (no other mods) two 25 drums and my makeshift peg bag dump pouch.

Memories of the day are all mixed up with the dog of war but sifting through them...

First round of freeze tag - Rampage jamming every third dart (it actually did well the rest of the day, especially once my muscles had remembered the unjamming sequence), then getting rolled over as an RS brought the rain then Mr. Crane clinically putting me out of my misery the 2nd time, and a 2-3yr old lad rocking Rebelle specs refusing to tag his mom back in Smile

Second round of freeze tag - much better balanced teams led to a longer lasting game leading to a mag change.. I took so long at it behind a car a young lad came along assumed I was frozen and used me as cover. I then skipped past half my team who were tagged completely forgetting the rules of the game, my name, and what team I was on.

The rest I'm sure is all mixed up..
Managing to just (just) get away from Justajolt in the first HvZ.
Collapsing on BigAl in probably one of the most pathetic attempts at a zombie nom ever. There was far too much heavy breathing in that dark corridor as the back to back HvZ rounds in the sun took their toll (along with the beer, fags, and Dominoes since the last exercise I took).
Feeling like I was doing well in the HvZ only to have a micro zombie nom me as I took a breath.
A little lad charging me with a Modulus, me clipping him, he not taking it, me putting a dart between his eyes and him keeling over backwards. Nice death.
Me using the Rampage as a long barrel pistol, tracking a lad as he ran across my vision and picking him off like I meant it (where we're you then YouTubers?)
Holding a corridor with BigAl in an attack the core only to have a dart put in my spine from behind and knowing I'd failed, as a micro nerfer had come around the entire building, past our respawn, popped one in my back and charged the stage for the win.

.. So it's amazing how your brain can hold onto positives, right? I can assure you all I was strong with the noob. I had a weak relationship with cover and a strong one with my respawn point in any given game.  Definitely more prey than predator.

Lessons to be learnt:
When prepping for a war the night before, actually do that.
With a pump action springer 2x25s did pretty well. There were only a couple of games I'd spammed more than 50 darts.
Cover is our friend.
Reload drills could be worth it.. If your mag change takes so long the opposition uses you as cover then you could probably do with some practice.
Take the locks out of the Rampage.

Lessons learnt:
Nerfers are a friendly bunch and good sportspeople.
Mormon church with a big garden and the sun shining makes a great venue.
I really, really enjoy this part of the hobby.. I'd lost sight of this with how much I've been enjoying the modding but charging around with just a simple Rampage was So Much Fun!

Thanks again to all those that took part and made me feel welcome!

Some great reports here so thank you to those who have contributed. Always good to hear others recollections of the day.

And Minky, you are preaching to the converted when it comes to having fun with Nerf Smile It looks like you got the whole event ethos - that it doesn't matter if you turn up with a heavily modified blaster and tac gear or just a hammer shot, either way you will have a great time, can still be competitive and take part in all the action, and will have some war stories to tell at the end of the day!

Yep had another ace weekend away nerfing. Good crowd this month, not too massive, loads of Britnerfers with amazing blasters to face off against and enough kids with disruptors to run round and shoot you in the back to bring you back to earth Very Happy Probably one of my favourite wars and the kids Said so as well, the sunshine really helped, first time I've nerfed in proper hot sunshine, loved it, thank goodness I had my tactical kilt on as I think I would have melted in my usual Nerf work trousers Very Happy Can't wait to combine the kilt with my new tac gear.

Good mix of games as usual. Loved the defend the core rounds and barrel run. HvZ was a killer in that heat and I have video evidence of minky collapsing on me but I was so tired I took the nom and joined the horde.

Was also nice to have a shot of some rival blasters in battle and loved my new shiney Artimis that I got that morning along with my kilt for my birthday although I did have a few feed issues with the blue knock off bawlz. Also ran the appolo as a secondary in my rival loadout and noticed it hit much harder than the artimis but the artimis has it advantages, can see it being a good skatepark rival blaster.

Took a few good tags and also managed some good shots as well as the improved accuracy of the waffle tips makes a huge difference in game play and much less spraying of darts is required.

Good fun, good to see so many of the Northern Monkeys team out, looking forward to more, cheers everyone.

Well what a cracking day!!!

Personally I found that I enjoyed myself more than many previous wars! I think it was the combination of the weather and the mix of people involved (I also didn't miss freeze tag one of my favorite games for a change), there may have been a few less than previous, but as they say, it's Quality not Quantity. The game types were all one's I enjoy (more shooting less thinking) and in general there was a really good atmosphere to the day.

I can't really give a blow by blow as it all just merges together in my head, but some things stick in my brain such as BigAl being deadly with the accuracy, the fact that balls are easier to see in the air than darts and the fact I witnessed some excellent tags by small children when those with more impressive blasters had failed.

One thing I must remember, and something I should really know by now, is that most kids don't make Zombie noises when Zombies, each time I was out was due to me not realising a kid was actually a zombie Smile

Oh and YouTube celebrity JustaJolt being asked for a selfie made me chuckle, It'll be autographs and JustaJolt branded duct-tape next Smile

I'll get a video sorted sometime before the next one, don't hold your breath.

I can only echo what others have said - a smaller group than I expected but it made not a jot of difference - a great afternoon of Nerfage.

Team FDT rose at 05:30 to leave Edinburgh at 07:20 and surprisingly made no stops on the way to arrive 30 minutes early! Lesson learned for next time!

It was pretty clear that the first round had uneven teams but this was soon rectified and Freeze Tag was immense. This was only my 3rd war and my first to use outdoor space and I really enjoyed being outside running around.

What was great was hearing the kids come up with ideas, one of which was to "disguise" our VIP which I think worked well Wink

My personal highlight was lying in wait for Dazzle to approach our base, out of sight, until he was almost upon it then spring up and tag him twice. I think Jolt may have this on camera (crosses fingers!).

It was great to put faces to Britnerf names and I was really impressed with everyone's mods. I ran most of the day between a 5kg EAT and a stock Triad (just for HvZ) and I was pretty happy with the EAT. The Triad is always awesome imho. I learned a ton about what I'd to run in future, and that one dump pouch isn't enough (which I probably already knew going into the event) and I have some ideas about a future loadout.

I have 15 Go Pro videos to sift through so that will start in earnest. I'm looking forward to my next GuN whenever that is.

Thanks to OMN and Jolt for their hospitality and for running a great war.

I still proclaim I made it to base before being tagged !!!! lol
But on a serious note fantastic tactic and completely exposed the fact I had just fully depleted my current mag getting past 3 red bibs which left me completely vulnerable during the 10 yard sprint to what I thought (wrongly) was safety.
It was great to meet you FDT, and always enjoy the weekends when the Scottish team are able to make it down south.

Wait... what??

We got pulled for this very tactic at the skatepark!!   Sporting integrity indeed 😲

Yeah, definitely need to get down at some point soon (ish)

Haha, I was just aware that I was standing around that base like a goon, clearly in full view of your team and thought I better try and hide, without anywhere to really hide! So back down the slope I went. It was a bit of guesswork as to when you would appear, but I actually watched Jolt who was videoing and when he started turning towards the base I took my chance. Thank goodness the EAT didn't jam up!

It was great to see your modded blasters, I forget the name of the cage you had but it made me chuckle. Yeah, it was great that a few Scottish groups made it down. My kids want to come back again to GuN so it's safe to say we'll be back. Look forward to catching up again Smile

It's a minor miracle! I've actually got a GuN16 video done, and it didn't take three weeks!

After thinking I wouldn't have the chance the stars aligned and I've got it done, link is below.

https://youtu.be/8JJ9J6SIjFY

I recorded at a lower quality (720p) this time so I could record at 120fps, but going through the footage there wasn't really any moments that needed slowing down this time!!! oh well Smile
